2020 Australia $1: The 1712 Zuytdorp Shipwreck

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

Well, since I finally shared the 1656 Vergulde Draeck shipwreck coin last week so we I may just as well finish this short 4 coin series by introducing the third coin of the Australian Shipwrecks Series.

In review, first was the 1629 Batavia, the struggle for survival and control like a movie script from a horror classic, not from ferocious sea creatures or cannibals but from a madman given power over life and death. Second, is the 1656 Vergulde Draeck, The Officer promised the remaining 68 survivors that he'd bring back help, "Just stay put!" They didn't. And not only the 68 survivors but also eleven members of the rescue crew too. Alien abductions? Perhaps. They're open to the possibilities so please have some proof.

Then, there was the 1712 Zuytdrop.

The Next Triangular Silver Coin

Reverse; The Zuytdorp, framed in maritime ornamentation

Height 33.9mm, Thickness 3.5mm

On August 11th, 1711 the Zuytdorp departed Wielingen Zeeland, the Netherlands to Batavia in Indonesia. Along with a cargo of general trade goods there were at least 568,000 coins, and that was a minimum, silver coin worth 248,000 Guilders.

Right off the start, slow languishing Atlantic winds made conditions poor on the ship such that 112 members of the crew and passengers died before finally reaching the Cape of Good Hope. 22 individuals were hospitalized and remained. Having enlisted more crew men and fresh supplies the Zuytdorp continued east to Batavia on April 22, 1712 accompanied by another ship, The Kockenge, but they were separated by stormy weather and that was the last time the Zuytdorp was seen.

This is not the Zuytdorp. It’s my silver Caravel broach posing as an East Indiaman.

☠️

Name; The Zuytdorp

  • Built at; Vissingen Shipwrights 1701
  • Class; Dutch East Indiaman
  • Owner; VOC
  • Port Registered; Amsterdam
  • Captain; Marinus Wijsvliet
  • Crew; 286
  • Guns; 32 Cannon, 6 Swivel guns.
  • Tonnage; 1,152 Tons
  • Length; 178 ft.
  • Beam; 37 ft.
  • Draft; 15.75 ft.
A model of the Zuytdorp can be seen at the Western Australia Maritime Museum.
    ☠️ 💀

The intended Brouwer route west was the Roaring 40s winds situated at 40 to 50 degrees south latitude heading across the Indian Ocean. The next leg would be to steer a northern heading upon sighting the Shores of New Holland (west Coast of Australia) then on to Batavia.
The ship never made it.

A search expedition was never mounted since it was not known if the ship was wrecked or captured by pirates. Even if the location would have been known, the cost in mounting an expedition combined with the reefs making navigation hazardous and the risk of more lives was a wild gamble. The earlier searches for the Batavia and the Vergulde Dreack were deemed failed attempts. No Zuytdorp survivors ever reached Batavia to tell the tale.

An expedition video gave me a good ideal of the hostile geography around the wreck site. The ship remains were found under the churning waters at the foot of the steep cliffs. Under cut rock formations, constant wave action and currents would have made swimming difficult only for the survivor to reach the relative safety of the jagged rocks. Boats would be smashed upon those rocks if in inexperienced hands.

If the disaster had happened at night the causalities would be terrible. It is no wonder that the Western Australian Maritime Museum has to date recovered a mere fraction of the remains. It is estimated that 80% of the silver coins remain at the bottom. There is only a window of several days in a year that it would be safe enough to send seasoned diving teams into the waters of this remote location.

Edge; Plain/Smooth

Should any of the Zuytdorp’s survivors make to shore, they still had to contend with the lack of supplies, tools, and weapons before dealing the expansive arid brush lands. And were there survivors? The evidence of their camp sites proved that there were, as to how many was unknown. However stories persist of these foreign people having intermarry with the local aboriginal communities. But that’s another story.

For now, it’s as if the sea wishes to keep hiding her secrets and treasures.☠️

Those are awesome! I bet the original from 1711 isn't cheap!

Even if they recover half the silver , they could be sold for a historical as well as collectable coins, I just hope I could bag a specimen for my sunken treasure collection. We won't see much of a reduction in the hammer price.

Among the items I'd love to get are coins from wreacks of; the Atocha, the San Jose, the 1715 fleet just name a few.

I currently have; El Cazador, Song Dynasty 10 cash, SS Japan, & SS Garisopa.

Antocha is expensive, all of Mel Fisher's stuff is really up there. I want at least one too. The 1715 are tough, I have metal detected along Florida after hurricane's when I was younger without any luck. Now the San Jose would be awesome if they would ever stop fighting about recovery, I would love some too!

And Mel Fisher deserves all the credit owed him considering all the hardship he had gone through his business, his health and the high cost to his family.
The circus swirling around the San Jose discovery sure show cases the worst in human greed in the form of government.

I know. I can't see them on Leofinance alpha UI, either. Ecency got all except one picture, PeakD is working fine. and my Internet access is spotty today.
Leo devs still has to work out those bugs. It is getting a bit frustrating for me since I put a lot into this post for these things to happen.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

At this point I write my post out in leofinance, then I just hive.blog to add photos and tags. It’s annoying wish there was a way to go back to how leofinance was before. Having replies in the “following” tab is way too much clutter as well

Finally, after a day! I hate it when it does that!
Lovely collection!!! I didn't get a single one of those triangular coins.
I thought it was pushing it. Rectangular coins are as far as I would go, hehehe!

It's taking too long for me to find #sgs members using the UI, back to PeakD for now. #explore tab is repetitive and cumbersome.
There's a new bullion dealer in Vancouver I had to check out.

A novel configuration as a coin, there are other coins that are made in this rather odd shape yet I think the Royal Australian mint got everything right in this design.

Best book I've read about the Batavia is Batavia's Graveyard by Mike Dash. Fantastic read and such a great story. Not sure if you know much about the wreck of the Batavia but it's a good one. West Oz sure copped a LOT of shipwrecks.

Author Mike Dash? I'd love to get a copy. I'l be checking Amazon for a digital version.
The plight of the Batavia accounts reads like a horror story when I reseached the Batavia shipwreck coin two years ago. I knew this story had all the elements of a great story that would be adapted to an epic suspenseful movie. All the producer will need to do is have the treasure of the Batavia to be haunted! Then asks the question, Why?

You've been stacking coins for much longer than I have, just the sized of your silver dimes stack alone is evidence of that. I wished that my father stacked rather than collected in his years before he passed it on to me. Silver prices in my Father's time looks dirt cheap to me as I look back to those years. Buying silver now, well we could look back 10 or 20 years from now and say the same thing.

I don't think you'll have to look back 10 or 20 years... It will probably be more like 10 to 20 weeks...

No one knows why the poor Zuytdorp had suddenly run aground. Steersman fell asleep at the wheel? Fog? Freak sailing conditions? We'll never know as deadmen tell no tales nor left any written accounts.
We can only speculate. Very dangerous waters off Australia requiring all the navigational skills of the most competent officers.

It's certainly a dramatic and eye catching Triangle shaped coins. I also think the Royal Aussie Mint got this novel design elements all right and well balanced as a commemorative type coin. I love this series.
I'm realy impressed how the obverse literally tells the story of the stricken ship, prompting the holder to look into the story behind the tragic events.
The inverted design of the Reverse signifying the state of distress.
Getting any replacement capsules will be a problem should they get damaged, so don't drop them.

I wish that the Royal Aussie Mint would make a similar series with all the other wreacks scattered around the waters of Australia. There are more than just these four Dutch ships.
I'm sure the Reefs around the Australian coast have claimed plenty.

Big Time sailing back in the day was a whole lot dangerous nowadays it's still easy to f****** and the seats could be unpredictable but we have so many tools maps GPS Echo Sounders and what not. I agree that would be really really cool as a design

Thanks for sharing sis! I love the shape of these coins and hope someday to obtain at least one. The story is amazing, but I suspect that the treasure will remain where the sea hides it. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely week!🤗💜🤗 !LADY

The latest attemps of recovering items involved submersable Drones, I can imagine how expensive it is getting just to try and recover more of the coins but the WAMM has it budget limits on it's projects like any other. It's like this treasure is cursed to remain in Davey Jone's locker.

I feel more impressed by these coins the deeper I ready about the tragic events behind these ships. The courage to partake in dangerous journey to the unknown to find riches and rewards, risking death and desperation.

Pirates, The English, the Spanish, or French, with 38 Cannons this ship had pretty good fire power for early 18th century. I guess they didn't count on an entire continent crashing into them.

38 cannons that’s a tremendous amount of fire power, not many would want to be on the receiving end of this pirate ship !😳😬

Says in the fine print that we have to apply for a permit from the WAMM before we can to get to the wreack site. It also states that we are not allowed to remove any artifacts from the site without permission, bilge rats! A waiver must be signed in the event that some one dies from partaking in any activity deemed risky or otherwise at the said site.
Do pirates care about paperwork?

This series of coins are already much more expensive to obtain since their launch a few years ago. I wish you good luck in acquiring them. Best time to get them is when they are just released.
