This particular coin personally ranks high up on my epic silver ship collection. Considering the long maritime history of the Dutch trade the Utrecht Ducat became for a time recognized as ‘the’ preferred money of international trade and now a special place among my treasures.

How this coin came into my hands.

Ben of HK Colonial Coin pulled this rabbit out of the hat find to my delight. Bad news was I had already spent twice my Dollar Cost Average buy more than twice over by now. It was those Scottsdale Bars as in the previous post. So I’m out of discretionary cash. Should I dip into my Emergency Reserve Funds? I still owe 80% my Hot water tank and refrigerator replacement costs. 🤔kay.

A rare old banknote from the overseas territory of the Netherlands is the former Dutch New Guinea that is ceded to Indonesia in 1962. I’m not going to ask how much this note is worth.

With a grin he whistled to the tune of, “I saw three ships on on Christmas Day" as he logged into his account and sent the cash.

I didn’t argue it.

He reiterated that our late Mom wanted all her children to be happy and be unburdened by her departure and the funds will eventually come out of his portion of her estate when it gets all settled. It looks like good value for the price getting this as PCGS MS 69 at the comparable value of an NGC MS 63. Plenty of wiggle room margin. The only peculiar unknown being the quantity minted with the only clue is Numista’s own rarity index of 94.

Why do I like this coin?

The Netherlands economy dominated in international trade from 1640 to 1720 and the Utrecht Ducat became the preferred currency of trade in Europe and the Indies. The Armored knight holding a sword and seven arrows was emblematic of Dutch economic dominance at the time. In my thinking this is familiar to me as the Pillars of the Spanish 8 Reals, or St. George and the Dragon of the British Sovereign.

We can see that the designer chose to denominate this in Daalders as in the original Silver ducat as it is also referred to as the Rijksdaalder for historical consistency.

The next reason is the magnificent design of the Reverse. @silverd510 would love it,
Three classes of ships were the backbone of the economic dominance of Dutch trade.

The Fluyt and it’s designed primarily as a cargo ship maximizing cargo, smaller crews, shallow draft to navigate close to shore and traveling into estuaries where most ships cannot. These ships were no more than 300 ton displacement and up to 24 meters length. And because of the design it cannot be refitted with guns in times of war.

The Dutch Galleon was the principle ship providing protection over the merchant ships and trade routes from enemies and of course pirates.

And the third class of ship were the East Indiaman class merchant ships displacing from 400 to 1300 tons much larger than the Fluyt yet well-armed against most aggressors.

The reverse suggests the larger left ship as a Galleon. Are the smaller two galleons or East Indianman ships? OR all three are E.I.s? Remember that the Fluyt is unarmed. I cannot find the original Certificate Of Authenticity information about the Designer’s thoughts at this time. What do you think?

Either way, this is a genuine keeper of a large 5 oz. silver ship coin!

Although all lovely, I love this one most: 1986 Netherland 5 Daalders Utrecht Ducat Anniversary. Silver coin.

Damn, these ships, after seeing so many shared by you guys (the OGs, haha) I've started to love them more and more. Yet I only have one coin with a ship on it, and I yet have to share it. It's definitely not as pretty as these above.

It's fun to read some more Dutch history in silver content here on Hive because when I was in school, I found history the most boring classes we had and never really paid much attention so most history I learned was by my own later in life when I watched documentaries by choice rather than being pushed certain things they wanted us to learn in school.

PS in addition to my other reply when you wrote about a thrift store, go for it, I think with your knowledge and stories you tell, you'd make a lovely host of such a store! I know I'd love to visit one like that myself knowing that the owner probably has tons of stories to share about many items, making it more interesting to buy them.

I miss thrift stores so much! Best I got is a flea market at the other coast because ours is truly junk only. It's been forever since I bought something at our local one.

I think my admiration of sailing ships started from working off fishing boats in my young busy summers and the arrival of a training sailing ship at the Vancouver harbor. I think Canadian history was dull too, as if it was made dull on purpose, a theory I still mull about. Now I learned more history on YouTube than I ever did at school. !LOL

Having a small store front Thrift store business would keep me busy and for fun I worked out some of the logistics, funding and capitalization. Lots of leasing spaces are available but very expensive even at subprime and inconvenient locations so far. It would be an extension for a church single parent family ministry meaning non-profit. It’s a dream of the month for the last few months pending my recovery time. @thisismylife

According to what I read, if you are something, I don't know what to call it, you like to buy and then pay hahaha, that is what then increases the cost of the purchase, I say this because of the water tank and the refrigerator hahaha.
I will tell you something that made me laugh, a friend tells me, FELIPE, this year we have to get a girlfriend, but I have noticed that women today are very focused on getting money, some even have their own businesses, so it will be more complicated since they are very independent.
My answer : Are you looking for a girlfriend or do you want a woman to take care of you, because if so you will NOT find one, I like women to be independent, that is precisely what I look for to get a girlfriend so we're going very slowly and I hope they accept us hahaha
All this to say that I like that women have that power of decision, that do what they want and we men admire them, we respect them and we will try to always support them, well that's what I think and do.

The cost of those recent appliance replacements are now carried free of interest by the vendor at this time. I’m just making use of the cash until I pay off when the remaining amount is due. My Cash Reserve stands just above $15,000 CAD and I can pay off the entire debt balance of about $5,000 CAD leaving me $10,000 of room should there is another urgent repair cost up to $5,000. The remaining $5,000 Cash is reserved only for urgent medical expenses only because that takes precedence over repairs. That’s my policy that worked well for me. Any liquid cash saved above that total $15,000 threshold can be spent on gold and silver as long termed inflation proof savings. My savings in gold and silver is larger than my Emergency Cash Reserve. I won’t sell any precious metals until my Cash Reserve is exhausted. By the way, I have a Rental suite in my house, so I could write off half my Hot Water tank replacement cost against my rental income.

I am glad you have that respect for women to have their own autonomy. In a family context many women may not necessarily want independence but simply having a say or input in the husband’s decision making. She may have a valuable insight that he may not have accounted for. Her intention is not to put herself above the husband but for the security and best interest of the family. Just be sure to acknowledge her should she be correct. All women want is a meaningful role even when the husband has the final say in a marriage partnership.

Each individual has the same importance whatever the income they are bringing to the table.

I'm married to an awesome stay at home wife. She might not bring money for now, but what she brings is worth at least as much.

That is such a pretty coin! Very, very cool! I like it too, you have great taste!

I know the feeling of should I dip into funds I shouldn't all too well, I'm lucky enough to have the house paid off. But those maintenance expenses add up fast!

Imagine the sense of adventure you would have to have to sail one of those ships back then, it would be like space travel today! With a sense of adventure and knowing death could around any corner...

Awesome stuff as always, I would love to pick up one of those coins!

It’s a big 5 troy oz. coin. I knew the details are usually awesome on coins of this size. As they say, “Photos won’t do justice to seeing this in hand.”

Being mortgage free I know my reserve can build itself faster back over the year with some room to spare baring any other unexpected repairs. Home maintenance and repairs can get expensive. My home also has a complete rental suite providing me a passive rental income entitling me to write off half my hot Water Tank replacement cost. And Kudos to the bold Dutch that they could establish a colony as far as New Guinea with 16th century level of maritime technology.

Details on 5 troy oz. coins are always better than their smaller 1 oz. counterparts. It was worth dipping into my Reserves but my Cuz decided to buy it for me to check my name off his Christmas shopping list. I was good until the Scottsdale Halloween bars came to market.

You are so right Sis. There is so much in Dutch coin minting history as I was diving into a system that can accommodate all seven provinces in a logical and useable system. I know I have a little old Dutch silver Stuvier but I don’t remember where I put it! Also, Ben has found a few fully documented and certified ship wreck silver Lion Daalder from a sunken Dutch ship but I cannot afford it. Yet.
Regardless, I can’t turn away from this lovely big coin.
