12 Days of Christmas; Day 6, & 7 -1996 Netherlands 3 Daalders - 400 years VOC Series

This is a considerably tougher silver coin, more accurately a medal commemorating the Dutch East India Company's first contact with the far east 400 years ago (1996).

In 1590 the Portuguese had a very lucrative trade monopoly on those highly prized and popular exotic spices and goods from the East Indies then sold throughout Europe from Lisbon. The Dutch did profit from re-selling to their markets until a war was declared between the Spanish and the Dutch. Naturally by heraldic relations Portugal sided with Spain and the Dutch were cut out of the deal.

The Dutch would love to cut out the Portuguese middle men and go direct to the source but how to get there was a guarded Portuguese trade secret.

It wasn’t until 1592 that cartographer Petrus Plancius published the route to the East Indies in a series of maps.
‘Cat’s outta the bag.’ But not quite.

Information is still needed to corroborate and confirm locations, route, contacts, landmarks, etc, etc, etc By 1594 a few astute men including one Cornelius De Houtman posed as merchants in Lisbon and India managed to acquire more than enough information to begin plan their first expedition to the East Indies

And from the same series for my Day 7 silver wish

Since we're in the same series the sister medal; Return to Amsterdam is just as beautiful as the Arrival medal.

With the backing of another six merchants and 290,000 Guilders in capital raised, these merchants formed the ‘Far-Distance Company’ the fore runner of the Dutch East India Company. It wasn’t just one ship but four; The Mauritius, Amsterdam, Hollandia and the Duifje. With 248 Men and officers they departed Texel on April 2nd, 1595.

It wasn’t until June 1596 that the Dutch ships finally arrive at Bantam, Java. At this point the Dutch had already lost seventy-one crew, including the Captain of the Hollandia, due to illness.
So what happened next?

Bantam merchants inflated their prices at the beckoning of the Portuguese.
The Ships were denied a fresh supply of water in Bantam.
Expeditionary leader Corneilus de Houtman was captured and ransomed by the Sumatrans. After being released and the ransom paid, de Houtman ordered a bombardment of the Sumatran city then like a pirates ☠️ raided some of the incoming ships of their spice cargo.
At Madura, the Amsterdam open fired upon a ship carrying members of the royal family to meet with the Dutch, killing a prince among the casualties.
At Sidayu the ships were boarded by hostile natives killing twelve crew along with the Amsterdam’s captain. ⚔️
I'd say they left a pretty bad first impression of the Dutch.

In summary, the expedition has been almost a total disaster. Only 94 crew remaining out of the 248. Expedition leader de Houtman’s rival who was always at odds with him died under strange circumstances. The condition of the fleet was poor and the Amsterdam was so un-seaworthy that she was set adrift and scuttled before they set sail for home from Bali on February 26th, 1597, and arriving back at Texel on August 14th, 1597.

However, they returned with enough peppers, nutmeg and mace spices to make some profit but more importantly is that the Dutch learned from this experience and made use of these lessons on their second expedition.

Until our next wish list adventure, Season’s greetings friends! 🎄🎁
And keep on Stacking.

Physical precious metals bullion stacking is only a part of my personal overall financial strategy. Meanwhile, collecting numismatics are a different set of objectives and strategy. Please, do your research before deciding to buy any bullion products.

Quite a horrific sailor's tale 😂😂

All for some pepper and spices...

Lovely coins though.. are they coloured? The ships seem a little blacker than the rest of the coin.

Well @seki1 That is what happens when you’ve got terrible leadership running the expedition. The focus is too much on the profits and not enough planning to develop longer term economic and diplomatic ties with this new world.

I believe these are artist representations of the silver medals than the actual medals themselves. While there are Cupro-nickel can still be found, a photograph of a silver version is hard to find. This gives me a strong feeling that these are quite rare. Numista.com nor NGCcoin.com does not even have a real picture of these medals and therefore rates the rarity to be 100%.

My Dream is currently focused on U.S. Crypto Coinage... I sure hope this is what President Trump has in mind, when he says the U.S. will be the Crypto Capital of the World... He's now talking about the Golden Age... As per what I write, U.S. Crypto Coinage will be 100% backed by U.S. Gold Coins that circulate...

I hope Trump can make good his promise of a Golden age of Crypto too. Whatever form it finally takes should benefit all. And I’d like to see Bitcoin maxy, Roger Ver be pardoned of the false Tax and money laundering crimes leveled against him by the IRS if Trump is to mean what he said.

(Edited)

President Trump always follows through on what he says... I'm afraid Bitcoin is more of a "Commodity" than a "Monetary Tool"... Monetary Tools need to be Stable... If I'm correct about the Reset, U.S. Crypto Coinage will be Stable and 100% backed by and equal "Face Value" amount of "Circulating" U.S. Gold Coins... That's my Story, and I'm sticking to it...lol... I hope all will well... Trust the Plan... I figure, it's been in the works for Decades...

There was a second expedition with the fleet doubled to eight ships and a different leadership. We know that the Dutch will have their day as history unfolds. History is always interesting reading.
Thanks for dropping in @silvertop and keep on stacking!

I looked high and low on a few places with only a few cupro-nickel versions that went up for sale. Yet, I haven’t found auction results of the silver version either let alone a real picture of these VOC medals. Numista.com, ngccoin.com, zip, zilch, and nada. I wonder if this fantasy coin really exists!

I'm glad to see that these old banknotes get some use out of them. I was just checking them and the collector valued for these had come up considerably since I first got them.

This is a challenging silver medal to find anywhere in the world at the moment, I couldn’t find a picture of the real silver one, just the cupro-nickel version. But if anyone could find it, it would have to be the real Santa Clause!

In this panel my wish is HBD, I look and look at the coins and I would choose a gold one, but NO, it is too much for this boy who would feel ashamed of not having a similar gift to give, so I better look at the requests of the others.
I wish you a happy day

I understand @lupega
I worked hard and smart for over twenty years to get where I am, and aside from a few of my bad choices I can still take advantage of the few opportunities given to me since beginning my Nursing career. And through the tougher years I often said to myself, "Dreams and Wishes are still free."
