Growing Through the Storm: Gardening Adventures in the UAE

An unexpected event unfolds. While the government issues warnings, the exact timing remains uncertain due to the unpredictable weather and shifting wind directions.

It occurred on February 12, 2024, at 3:30 in the morning. Fortunately, I wasn't asleep as I had just finished attending an online gathering live, ending around 1:45 am. I went to bed around 2:15 am, and less than an hour later, I woke abruptly to the loud noise of wind, thunder, and lightning.

Water seeped into our house. With no roof or protection on our glass door, rain and wind allow water to enter. So, when this weather hits, we keep buckets and rags handy to dry and clean the floors. This occurrence is almost annual, but this year marked the strongest typhoon in our 18 years here in the UAE.

"My tamarind plant thrives in extreme weather conditions, particularly the heat, making it resilient against adverse effects. With sufficient soil fertilizer and water, it grows and flowers effortlessly.

Fortunately, my plants weren't significantly affected because I had already supported them. I used sticks for my tomatoes to prevent their stems from breaking in the strong winds, while my pumpkins were protected by a net underneath. Having the pumpkins hanging instead of on the ground proved beneficial, as it prevented the fruits from spoiling and rotting.

Surrounding my garden is a pile of sand that effectively blocked the entry of a significant amount of water. Despite this, some water did overflow, but it quickly drained away as the sand absorbed it downward.

I'm delighted because I have a whole week to water the plants. However, I couldn't plow the soil for planting sweet potatoes this February. If I manage to start planting them this month, I should be able to harvest some by the first week of June.

I appreciate those who supported and trusted me to create original content. I want you to know that I'll only be writing about my plants until March. I'm considering stopping because all my hard work in writing is being ignored due to the downvotes of a toxic Leader of Filipino from hiveph. If I didn't care about this site, it would have broken down like Steemit a long time ago, receiving automatic comments that most people dislike. Once again, Thank You very much.
