Tale Of The Merchant's Daughter [Poetry]

IMG_20240118_162012.jpgdivider curl .webp

A sober tale of the merchant's daughter,
Chronicled to every young ear at bedtime,
Before sweet sleep lulls them in dreamland,
Of her humility, true love and patience,
Yet fate dealt her a hand perceived as cruel.

Given as a pleaser to the king's only son,
In his vanity, he saw her as a lowly commoner,
Who offered him nothing of value.
Her most beautiful face unable to charm him,
He orders her to the depths of the treasure chamber.

A hole overshadowed by darkness and gloom,
Where fire and light dared not touch,
Except wielded by the favoured,
The merchant's daughter trembled before the heavy iron door,
Like a well-worn cloth discarded to the dust.

The chamber built on ancient stones,
Carved like the mind of a ferocious sleeping beast,
Welcomed her with a groan that shook the grounds.
So she could work to the bone,
Her nails battered, and palms coarsed.

Into the depths of the chilly black space,
She trod softly with reverence, muttering,
Sacred words of obeisance to an ancient, animate building,
That sees and hears all, the bearer of millenials of secrets,
As the inner door glided open with a screech.

Adorned with glittering islands of rare jewels,
Sparkling like small constellations strewn on a night sky,
The merchant's daughter gasped at millenia of treasure,
It's value immeasurable
Lined on black velvets on shelves,
And warded by age-old magic and spells.

A worn parchment stirred by invisible breeze
Rested on her open palms,
Bearing in blood-red ink the name of the last caretaker of the treasures,
Who sought to upturn kingdoms in a cascade of chaos,
And was stifled to death by the ancient chamber.

Centuries pass as the legend of the merchant's daughter spreads,
Empowered by the treasure chamber,
She was not forgotten.
She ruled the kingdom after the prince lost it
to vanity.
For she became one with the treasures,
It's magic rendering her ageless and immortal.

Jeez... I'm always envious of poets... Like, how are you able to fit an entire story into few words and make it musical at the same time?
This is beautiful indeed. It tells a deep story. We might not have a say in the situations life places us in, but we surely have a say in how we react to them. We can allow them out us down, or we can rise above them and move on.
This is life😇

Well said! We've no power over life and it's happenings but we have control over our choices and how it turns out.

Thanks so much for the compliment. I do try to make my poems interesting somewhat and this one was inspired by the words "merchant's daughter". I appreciate your visit. !LUV 🙂

You're right. It's often those people that we don't pay attention to or underestimate that end up soaring above others. Vanity is a terrible vice that led to the Prince's downfall while a lowly commoner with a decent heart ruled his kingdom!

Thanks so much for your insightful comment and visit. Do take care and have a wonderful day. !PIMP 💕
