Emotions & Feelings || Hablemos de RESILIENCIA
In recent years this word has resonated a lot, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic when our routines changed drastically. We have all at some point heard it and even uttered it. But what does it mean to be resilient? What is this whole new concept all about for some of us? This week I have been reading and researching a little more about it, in order to have a clearer definition of this word to avoid using it incorrectly in any conversation. Today I share with you the summary of what I was able to learn.
First of all, it is important to know where this word comes from. As a language teacher, it is not unusual for me to like to know the origin of words and their linguistic function. I have always enjoyed learning new words and studying in which contexts or situations it would be appropriate to use them. According to the article THE TRUE MEANING OF RESILIENCE: This word has its etymological origin in Latin, the verb, resilio, resilire which means to jump back, to bounce back i.e. to return to normal.
As for its meaning in the psychological field, this same article argues that resilience is the ability of certain people to overcome adverse situations and achieve success despite difficult contexts or arduous life experiences.
Todas estas definiciones parecen un poco utópicas, no obstante, según mi experiencia personal puedo decir que todos en el fondo tenemos un espíritu resiliente, quizá nos falta hacernos más conscientes de esta capacidad y talvez aprender a ejercitarla.
Taking all these definitions into consideration, we can say that a resilient person is one who has the quality and capacity to go through difficult, complicated and painful processes and be able to emerge stronger from them. A resilient person not only endures the storm, but learns to dance in the rain.
All these definitions seem a bit utopian, however, according to my personal experience I can say that deep down we all have a resilient spirit, perhaps we need to become more aware of this ability and perhaps learn to exercise it.

People with resilience are constantly asking themselves what they can learn from the situation they are facing, always looking for the benefit and the light at the end of the tunnel. They are the type of people who see opportunities in the midst of crises. This ability may be innate for some people, but I personally believe that you can also learn to be resilient. We all have complicated situations in our lives so we have the perfect opportunity to train ourselves to be resilient.
In the article The 11 Habits of Resilient People, you will find a detailed list of the characteristics these people possess and how we can acquire them and turn them into habits.
As a Venezuelan, I can proudly say that in my country there are many examples of resilience. Most of the Venezuelan people are people who have had to reinvent themselves a thousand times in order to survive in the midst of the crisis, without losing their essence and good sense of humor in the process. Resilience for us is much more than a buzzword that is often used in social networks; resilience for the vast majority is a reality and a way of life and for many others it is the only thing that keeps them alive.
