Visiting Sissi. Not a princess, a seaside village in Crete!
It is true.
When you start being a photographer, you see things differently.
It was a long time since I last visited this seaside fish-village.
Its name; Sissi.
(As you may have guessed from the first photo!)
I was very happy to see this sign put by the municipality at such a lovely place. I hope I could be there during sunset...
Again, it was a short trip, but I will share my experience with you and hopefully you get to visit one day and be prepared!
About Sissi
Sissi is a charming village. located approximately 40 kilometers east of Heraklion city. Unlike other hyper-touristic areas, Sissi offers a peaceful and idyllic setting. It retains a more authentic and tranquil atmosphere, with picturesque landscapes, a scenic harbor and lovely spots to photograph.
I decided to take a walk and check out the colors of the village. Even though I stayed only for 1 hour, most of the time I was walking around the village.
I saw colors, I saw vividness ... and I decided to go to the port side!

(port view coming in a bit)
The details impressed me, even though I think that the part of the village was not the most representative one.
I like it when I see flowers around doors
Or old doors, that strive to keep their older colors on.
I so hope that they could be revived!
Sometimes I really I wish I could have the money to buy these old houses and make them new again!
I wonder how many people live in the area during the winter time.
As I approach the port, I see that many people actually swim here. Perhaps because most of the beaches here are full of stones and rocks.
One of the most distinctive features of Sissi is its natural harbor, which resembles a large lagoon.

Next to the harbor you will find traditional tavernas, cafes, and shops. The village’s relaxed pace and friendly locals contribute to its warm and welcoming ambiance.
Of course if there would be one cat, I would see it and photograph it!
Here is a taxedo, looking much like my kitty.
I slowly went back to the place where our vehicles were parked and before we left the area...
I took another short video, just as a good bye (but only for now)
Till we meet again :)

About the name of Sissi
I was curious about it so I asked ChatGPT to let me know more.
I could not find any credible source online and I plan to check the books I have, but the below seems very interesting and I hope some of it will be true!
The name "Sissi" (sometimes spelled "Sisi") is believed to have derived from the ancient Greek word "Sisy" or "Sissio." Historical records suggest that during ancient times, the area where Sissi village is now located was called "Sission," a small settlement that may have been associated with the nearby Minoan civilization. The name likely evolved over time into its current form.
There are also local legends and interpretations regarding the origin of the name. One story suggests that the name comes from the word "sis," which in Cretan dialect can mean "shade" or "coolness," possibly referring to the village's natural landscape, including its shaded and sheltered location by the sea. Another theory is that the name could be linked to the village's historical significance as a resting place for travelers and traders who found relief in its calm and welcoming environment.
Overall, the exact origin of the name "Sissi" is not definitively known, but it carries historical roots that connect the village to Crete's ancient past while reflecting its tranquil and picturesque nature.
