Getting scammed - a personal story

This post is about how I was inevitably scammed, and what I would change if I would redo it all from the start.

I have a good friend, whom I really appreciate and trust.
(I will not disclose if it is a woman or a man, so I will use the they)

This person knows money very well, they trade daily and they are in the many crypto and economic communities. Crypto and Fiat is what they deal with in their every day life.

I do not know much, but I do not a few things about how to stay safe. I also know how to recognize a scam when I see it.

A pyramid scheme + crypto
Also known as .. a Ponzi Scheme

A Ponzi scheme is a type of investment scam where returns to earlier investors are paid from the contributions of new investors, rather than from actual profits generated by a legitimate business or investment. It’s structured to create the illusion of a profitable venture, but there’s no real source of income or profit behind it.

Back to our story.

My friend came to me and told me..
Hey Katerina, there is a new bot that accepts a minimum of 20 USDT and it gives a 2% daily profit. Me and friends have been doing it for a while, and some of them have withdrawn from it, so for now at least - it is legit. I am not sure if and when it will collapse, but - do you want in?

I thought, why not?

I knew that when people get early in ponzi, they may win a little money.
And I did not want to discourage my friend, who advised.

I knew and I told my friend, look - this is going to go down. But I dont know when.

But I decided to put some money, just a few USDT - to see how it was going.

The new user needed to create an account online, and click a button on a daily basis to place the order.

I created the account, put some USDT and every day I was clicking the button.
I started seeing some profit, but did not take my money out.
I was thinking of sharing this information here, on hive, and with some friends - but always with a note to be careful.

My friend called me a few days ago and said...
XXXX has withdrawn 2500$ - and YYYYY has already doubled his money. I am taking my profit every few days.

And I replied...
I am about to go on a trip, so I dont want to give more money, because I will need for the journey. But - when I come back I may put some extra $$$

And yesterday my friend broke the news.

The system is up, our money is gone.
All of it.
Gone. BOOM. Disappeared.

One of our other friends, decided to invest their siblings money. They had earned money, but recently put even more in the system.

BOOM.

I felt sorry for everyone. For me too.
Some of the users I know, had a profit. Some had a loss.
I had a loss, but not a big one.

I am the only one to blame for this.

So, what would I do different - in case I redid it now ?

I would put the minimum amount and I would start withdrawing after a few days.
I would at least try to get my initial money back. One very important thing that would hit a big bell now is that the moment we hear about users withdrawing large amounts - this means that we should RUN, RUN FAR AWAY!

This probably means that they will get greedy, put more money and then the system will fall down the rocks - because the system owners will also be greedy.

Even though I do cry about my money, because even thought it was not much, it would be a great help at this point, I am grateful for another lesson learned in the crypto world.

Please always, always, ALWAYS, do your due diligence - and DO NOT INVEST more money than what you can lose.

Do you have any similar experience?
Have you ever participated to a scheme that evidently looked like a ponzi?

Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for sharing this. I certainly agree with the advice about not investing more than you can afford to lose.

I was dragged into a similar one(or perhaps even the same one!). My friend tried to convince me to join but I said I've been in crypto for so long that I know it's a scam and said no. Then my friend introduced me to her friend who had been in for some time and apparently got greedy.

This wealthy lawyer wanted to move to a higher tier and needed refs to do that. He had over €10k there and wanted to pay me in with a free €80! At that point, I couldn't refuse. I clicked it every day and somewhere near €200 I was thinking about withdrawing but this time it was me who got greedy and poof, they closed the shop.

So, I didn't lose any money with that and therefore don't feel that about it but do feel bad for everyone else. For regular people who put their savings into it.

What's even crazier is that cos of that I'm still in this TG group where people join similar ones KNOWING that they are the same kinda scams but they speculate on how long these shops stay up! Crazy. Just crazy.

It sounds as if it is the same.
Does is name has to do with ocean? 😅
My friend also had several refs, and managed to get out with profit, because they would withdraw every 3 days. My amount was so small, that I wanted to wait a bit for it to make sense.
I guess it is ok if someone participates knowing the risk.
We need to remember that everyone is responsible for their own actions so they should do their own research and always be safe

Thanks for sharing your experience!

It was called Byteswap but there seem to be so many of these around. I agree that putting money in those knowing the risks is ok if there's an exit planned. It's like gambling but in my opinion, it's not so cool anymore if they keep luring friends in and being vague about the fact that it's going down soon.

I get the appeal for quick money but if you want to gamble why not go to a regulated casino or trade crypto on leverage? Both of those activities give much better odds than something like this.

🤑

We all love a good Ponzi in crypto.

Well, people addicted to quick profits try all sort of things I guess.
I dont plan to try out any of these any time soon :)
Unless I will be doing some kind of investigation or experiment (for the sake of the reportage)

If you want to earn with a higher risk, than there are better was than Ponzi.

User margin trading! But be careful.

Yes, risk is always involved and this is the reason I usually prefer to try low risk actions (hodling rather than trading etc)

A learning lesson that we should not invest that we can't afford to lose on such projects. I think every amount matters. No matter if it's a big or small.. I had some similar situations in the past but now I just stay away. I am ok not to earn now but not ok to lose

Very true, thanks Alok! I agree with you.
I have managed to stay away from ponzi many many times (and plan to stay in the future too!)

Hectic, these scams are plenty in crypto. Sometimes entire crypto exchanges go down. I lost a little in such a case a few years ago. Then sometimes popular crypto coins go down, like LUNA last year, where many of us lost, some huge amounts.

We need to be detached from material possessions like money. They come and go, and focus on our other treasures, like friendships, or own good character or personality, and of course or health and the beauty of nature. And ultimately our evolution of consciousness.

I also recognize a scam when I see it but there are sometimes when some scammers make it look so real that you may not be able to detect if it is scam or not
That can be crazy
