Discovering Parts of Heraklion's Street Canva
Yesterday blends with today.
Artists (or hooligans?) use the city walls when they have words to say.
I enjoy hearing the walls of my city 'talking to me'. I try to discover as many walls as I can. I try to notice them, to observe and to hear them. I respect their history and try to be someone who is documenting the street art and new things that happen in the city. This may be a whole time project in the future.
I have great respect for the artists that take their time and inspiration out on the streets. They come and leave a piece of their thoughts and talent, for all of us to admire. But what happens when there are people who simply write swears or bad things? Who ruins property that they do not own? And who, in the end, can tell if something is art of not? After all, art is about expression. Every form of expression should leave a message for us to demystify.
Do you like street art? Do you have in your city?
Do you know the differences between graffiti and street art?
For me, both forms can be art.
The most important difference between them is that usually graffiti is illegal, but for streetart - permission has ben asked. And granted.
Street art and graffiti may overlap in many ways, however, there are also two other factors to consider when comparing them.
Technique and Inten.
Street art is about drawing images while graffiti usually is about writing mottos on the walls. I often see graffiti including only the signature of the creator! Is this art? Maybe!
In terms of intent, street art is usually done with the owners' permission or can even be commissioned.
Most of the time, graffiti is considered to be vandalism and is usually illegal.
Art on walls aims to share a message, to provoke awareness, to share something beautiful while graffiti is usually associated with defacing public property and marking territory.
Graffiti artists usually have their own communities and teams, often expressing political or other views, showing their anger through their slogans. Their messages are usually directed to a specific audience. Street art on the other hand, is more understandable and widely accepted.
In this post I have included both street art and graffiti.
(a) art used to beautify an old abandoned house
(b) art referring to Samuel Howe, an American who helped the Greeks during the revolution
(c) mottos and slogans of the city ... "Please Take me" . "I love you so.." "Our only real home, our childhood years.." (ouch!)
(d) more artwork to beautify parts of the city .. (one of them does not exist any more)
How about you?
Do you notice the art around you? Do you have any in your city?
Would you like to be able to discover more about an artwork? Its creator and its history perhaps?
Thank you for visiting!
