Sandman tv series 2022
Dream
The Sandman series based on Neil Gaiman's comic book is a specific one.
First of all, it should be mentioned that the world of Neil Gaiman's Sandman is more than 30 years old, and during this time more than 17 volumes of this extraordinary adventure have come out.
The series focuses on volume 1, but after the main plot bounces and goes into the subsequent volumes making a bit of chaos.
The first volume of the comic is already a classic ( the later ones as well) but here we learn about the charismatic creator of snow and why he was kidnapped.
The series follows the same pattern, and as far as the first volume is concerned, the comic book and the series are very similar ( except for some small exceptions).
If you don't like comic books then you certainly know Neil Gaiman's books, where he even mesmerized the reader with his fanatical adventures where more than once he took myths and created his various variations ( American Gods)
In the series there is also a lot of mythology, but it is mythology closer to our hearts because we will see, Death, Desire, Despair or just Morpheus.
The first 2 episodes focus on Roderick Bugress, who after the loss of his favorite son decides to do something impossible to kidnap Death and have her give his son back, but something goes wrong and in Roderick's house instead of Death appears Morpheus.
The comic book has a more interesting narrative so when it comes to the psychological approach to the characters and family, the series cuts hard, but the main plot of the Dream prison is preserved and this satisfies.
Later it gets even more interesting when Morpheus has to recover his artifacts in order to have the power to "build dreams" again.
Episode 5 is such a magnum opus of the series all the energy is put into this episode making it the most interesting. When the enigmatic John appears on screen with his artifact he wants to fix the world and in my opinion this is the most interesting point of the whole series. Here we have visions of a world without lies, but also an existential disease, or what keeps us in a particular place.
The inconspicuous protagonist even rips apart human emotions, showing who many of us really are when these little lies are missing.
And here I might add that in the comic book John's sequence itself is a bit shortened thus in the series it has a better tone and is more interesting to watch.
However, after the rapture comes a slow decline, as from the 6th episode the series gets lost in what it wants to show.
The 6th episode still tries to show Sandman's pain because he doesn't know who to trust and doesn't like people all the more because they hurt him and the world he ruled.
I half of the episode is quite interesting conversation about life and garbage is interesting and you want to follow the fate of Dream.
However, later on it's sadly a corner when Sandman has to find the vortex ( a woman).
The whole vortex plot is rearranged so poorly in the series that I even yawned.
Unfortunately, what worked well in the comic Netflix managed to spoil it, and it's so that it's hard to watch from the second half, it's like two different series glued together quickly.
I don't know the whole Sandman comic, but there are quite a number of lgbt threads in the series( a lot of threads) I suspect that most of the threads were created because of the Mode that prevails.
The finale of the series is not satisfactory since something happened to trigger something else and give a reason for the next season, unfortunately it was a lot of things have been shallowed and made them fast by which we get lost while watching because the finale is explained on the principle, however, a mistake and I take "it" on myself.
This, unfortunately, is the biggest flaw of this series, with the cis has been so badly messed up, and any tension building escapes just by the final showdown.
To recap:
The world of Sandman up to episode 5 is a great fantasy series with a big touch of gothic and reading magic. However, after that you can see the decline and lack of consistency in what they wanted to show, and the open-ended finale is unfortunately not interesting.
It's a series that gets lost in its existential life, and the viewer gets stuck in episode 7 and doesn't know how to escape from it.
Is it worth watching?
Both yes and no
If you like gothic fantasy cinema then you'll have fun on the first few episodes, and if you like a certain woman's arduous search for her brother then you'll have fun from episode 7 onward.
It's a pity that the series couldn't be completely equal and towards the end it lost its verve, and the main antagonist even became a caricature that appears to die in a rather mediocre way.
I rate the first half of the series at 8/10 because you can see that someone has put some effort and adapted the comic book well, or at least re-cut it, but from the 7th to the 10th episode I rate it at 4/10 due to the total lack of sense and the very extreme cut of the comic book.
That's it.
Thanks for reading
