Setting up my home photography studio
Over the past few months I've been laying down the groundwork for starting my own photography business! 😃
I've mentioned this once or twice before, but here's a quick recap: with @holoz0r's great help and recommendations I've discovered trustworthy websites where I proceeded to buy some equipment and backdrops, I've been reading over his and other people's contracts and release forms in order to properly structure my own, I've read up about lighting and colour theory, and I've been clearing out a spare room in my house which has now officially transformed into my very own (small) at-home studio.
This past month I've started designing business cards, flyers, claiming social media accounts, etc. I've printed out my confirmation for equipment and public liability insurance, aaaannnddd... I'm basically all ready to go.
My insurance starts in September — just a couple more days!!
I've predominantly been an outdoor photographer, relying on natural light whenever taking photographs. Creating my own lighting and moving them into position to get different shadows and things is completely out of my comfort zone. So, practice makes perfect, yes?
Well there's never any perfect. But practice makes things better. 😊
I've been using my son as a little guinea pig as I test out different lighting positions and my new backdrops, and I'm hoping to get a couple of friends to let me use them as guinea pigs too so that I'll have a few photos in my portfolio relatively soon.
Once I have a few more photos of people who are not my son, I think I'll be ready to properly advertise myself. I want to start by advertising free photos in exchange for helping with my portfolio, my partner has a bunch of my business cards and can hand those out shamelessly while doing his own work, a couple of the shops nearby have given me approval for me to have my business cards at their counters and to post up some flyers.
I wanted to do all of that a couple of months ago but with getting the flu and then Covid immediately after, I'm making up for lost time at the last minute. xD Woo.
It'll all fall into place, I'm sure. 😊

Until next time! 📸

Wow, that was out of the blue!
I had't realise that you are so interested in photography.
Good luck with your business, I hope it will go as you wish :)
I've always had an interest in photography, but never the balls to actually do anything about it due to anxiety and awkwardness and not feeling like I could ever be good enough. 😅 I'm overcoming all of that. 🙂
That's super :)
My best wishes!!!
I wish you great success in your future business! I would love to do similar, possibly renting out my services to take photos in this remote location of the landscape, animals, and sea ice. Although it seems like a lot of the promo shots used of the arctic rely on commercial drone photography and that doesn't interest me in the slightest lol.
Oooohhhh, that would be cool! And perfect too since you live in such a location. I have no interest in drone photography either. When I applied for insurance a lot of the questions were about drones and I'm just... uhhh.. normal? photography? thanks? lol.
That's awesome! Congrats. I wish I had space for a whole room dedicated to photography. I make do with the little bit of space I have and thankfully have some solid equipment to help make it work.
I wish the room was larger. 😆 I didn't realise how small it was until I started moving gear into it, but it's fine for my purposes. I expect I'll be out of it more than in it!
At least you have some space to work with. Looking forward to seeing some more photography posts.
I look forward to witnesses your success vicariously. I'm also always a simple discord message away to answer any questions!

My toes are... unique. I wore shoes too small for me when I was younger and now my toes are fugly... but perhaps that just adds to their monetary charm.
Wow how great! I'm so glad that your project is coming along, I also do photography and I know what it takes to create a small studio to do this kind of photography and it's quite an effort, I send you a big hello and I'm sure everything will continue to go great!
Thanks! 😊
I've just put out a call for a couple of free photoshoots to help with my portfolio and the response was unexpectedly overwhelming, so hopefully once I have these shoots done the business side of things continues to go well. 😅
