Should Phones Be Allowed in Classes and Exams? A Student's Perspective

I have being a student all my life and throughout these years, I have witnessed various scenarios where students sneaked their phones into exam halls. Some of the students managed to use them successfully without being caught, while others weren’t so lucky. The punishment normally given to those who were caught might be a suspension or even expulsion from the school. Now, these raises question which is, should phones be allowed during classes, tests, or exams?

In my opinion, students who bring phones into an exam hall are likely to use them to cheat. This is inappropriate because, at the end of the day, they may come out with good grades but lack the knowledge to back them up. Whenever they are in a situation where they have to apply what they supposedly learned ol, they would likely struggle, as they didn’t take the time to study and understand what they were being taught in the first place.

Honestly, if I had the opportunity to use a phone for all the tests and exams I took in the past, life would have been much easier. I am certain that i would have excelled in almost every subject . However, there wouldn’t have been much knowledge or information for me to use later on. For instance, there are still some things I learned in secondary school that are still useful in my university courses today. Some of them have even helped me out in some exams. If I had relied on my phone back then, would I still have that knowledge?Probably not.

Asides from that, allowing phones during exams has another major disadvantage: it would make students lazy. How many students would actually put in effort to study or attend classes if they know they can take their phones into the exam halls?? They would just be few students going to class. Infact presently, in my school some students don't even go to class at all even when we aren't allowed to use phones in exams,so giving them this kind of opportunity would only make them put less or no effort in studying.

Furthermore, this practice would affect the critical thinking of students. We would have a large number of dull students in school. Just Imagine a teacher asking the students in the science department to define biology, and they still need to consult their phone for an answer. Doesn’t that sound unpleasant and disappointing? What is then the purpose of them learning when they can't even use their brain to think and find solutions.

Back then when i was still in the primary and secondary school, we were never allowed to bring phones to the school. However, when I got into the university, I got to understand the importance of having phones in class. For some of our courses we normally don't write notes so we often had our lecture notes in PDF format, and always needed phones in class. Also, there where times were a lecturer will actully struggle to explain a term, and we would just use our phones to check and provide the meaning. This actually made learning in class more engaging and interactive. However, there were also times when we got distracted with different things like picking up calls or scrolling through social media that caused us to lose focus and miss out on important points in class.

I still don't think phones are being used by students in primary or secondary school in Nigeria. However ,I feel they can be useful in class for them only that they needs to be regulated and monitored because they are usually not yet matured and may use the phones inappropriately.

At the end of the day,i would say phones can still be allowed in the class but never in test or exams.
