My favourite musical instrument : Drumset.

From an early age, my exposure to music education came through teachers who traveled from Lagos to visit my school and teach us various musical instruments.

These experiences left a lasting impression on me, especially my early fascination with the recorder. I vividly recall my deep love for this instrument, which became my favorite during those years. I even remember asking my mum to buy me a new recorder, complete with the plastic tool that was essential for maintaining it. At the time, the recorder was the easiest to learn and play compared to other woodwind instruments like the saxophone, clarinet, . We began our lessons by learning to play the eight basic notes (d, r, m, f, s, l, t, d) and understanding how to produce sound by positioning our fingers over the holes. This early introduction to the instrumet , made it both accessible and enjoyable for me.

As I grew older and started attending different events such as parties, shows, and church services, I found myself falling I
deeply in love with the drumset.

Despite not been able to play it myself, I was deeply impressed by its impact and importance on live performances. I particularly remember attending a burial ceremony where a musical band performed, and the drummer’s exceptional skill and energy stood out. His performance was vital in shaping the event’s mood, adding a layer of excitement and liveliness that enhanced the overall experience. The drummer’s ability to engage the audience and drive the rhythm made the celebration more dynamic, fun and memorable.

It’s fascinating how a well played drumset can lighten up the mood of an audience and make them energized, even without vocal support or backup. When in use, the drumset fills the venue with powerful beats that reverberate through the space, and creates an atmosphere that encourages movement and participation. As someone who enjoys dancing, I find the drumset’s beat enjoying and pleasing. The beat often boost my mood and makes me feel more alive.

The drumset's significance in musical performances cannot be exaggerated. It plays a crucial role in nearly every concert or live show, and its presence is essential for creating a compelling and oustanding experience for the audience. The rhythmic foundation it provides helps to connect with listeners, drawing them into the performance and keeps them engaged . I was particularly struck by an Asake show I watched on YouTube, where the drummer’s performance was so appealing that it made me feel as if I should leap into the phone to shower him with money or attend the show in person. The drummer’s energetic playing highlighted how important the drumset is , to making live music impactful and engaging.

Reflecting on my experiences, I’ve come to appreciate the drumset not just as a musical instrument but as a vital element of live performance. Its ability to energize an audience and drive the rhythm and beat of music is incomparable. Whether in a small gathering or a large concert, the drumset’s beats have the power to transform an event, and make it more lively and enjoyable. This awareness has deepened my admiration for the instrument and has cemented its place as my favourite.
