Elders play a key role in the family.

Sadly, all my grandparents have passed away, but I feel fortunate to have had the priviledge of knowing my paternal grandmother during her lifetime.

Although , I was young when she died, but i can still remember some of the roles she played in my life and our family .

She was a calm, loving, religious and kind hearted woman. I don't think you can meet my grandmother for help, and it will be something in her capacity and she won't be willing to render you help.

My mum and dad are separated and my grandmother actually played a big role in making my mum still choose to stay in his house. They where times , where my dad won't be willing to help me and my siblings out with money in school , and my grandmother will take it upon herself, to send us some money.

She was a peacemaker and was always advicing my mum to stay calm and always be close to God ,and with time, everything will be fine. Apart from that , she was just our backbone , there could literally be something that is bothering you and you will just meet her for advice, she will tell you in the best way you can understand , using even her own story, and say it in a way that you will feel relieved and feel a deep sense of comfort and peace."

These elders have gone through different phases of life so they always endeavour to make efforts, that will prevent their own children and grandchildren from going through the same path or falling victim to a mistake, that may lead to destruction.

They tend to provide support and even at times, care and cater for their grandchildren , even more than some of the parents. They just love easily , and believe life needs to be lived with ease and not in haste.

As they say , "Experience is the best teacher". These elderly individuals, have literally spent longer years on earth, even more than our parents, and they have faced more challenges and have more experience and wisdom about life, so therefore , listening to what they have to say is the best for any child and any member of the family to move forward in life and not go astray.

These elderly individuals play a crucial role in maintaining family unity . During the days when my grandmother was still alive , we used to celebrate parties in her house of residence , such as the New year party on every January 1st, where every male child of the family willl contribute to fund the party ,while the females in the house will be in charge of cooking, we do kill a cow for this New year Celebration. We also celebrate the 1st birthday of every grandchild, but after she died all those parties and events stopped.

These celebrations were very vital and important as they normally bring all the parents and grandchildren together in one accord. Even members of the family that are staying overseas, normally come to celebrate this events and if they can't make it , they send money to fund the party and everyone will have fun, eat, enjoy, dance together and be happy. I still always think of these days and wish it can be restored.

The role grandparents play in the family is irreplaceable, they tend to show more love , care and affection , and also give out valuable advice with their wisdom and their stories.
