The phone rang immediately after ordering drinks and dessert. Jennifer glanced at the caller's name on the screen, lowered her head, then eased the phone from the table. She motioned to her husband, Philip. If she was going to lose it, she didn't want him and their son, Brandon, to witness. Philip jumped into action. He gathered and escorted him back to the arcade area. His newest bear and favorite strawberry cheesecake occupied his thoughts, so he didn't notice his parents' worried exchange. Trembling, Jennifer located the button and hurriedly accepted the call.

It was one of those calls that you never hope to receive. The ones that threaten to toss your future into turmoil. She'd already braced herself for the outcome carrying butterflies in her stomach alongside their new twin daughters after her last doctor's appointment. It was the something else I need to tell you that she wouldn't be able to endure.

She listened carefully as her physician explained the next steps.

All the while, she recalled the last visit that floored them. But things were going extremely well with the treatments. Philip pinned the report to the weekly calendar, smiling after each entry. Finally, the first trimester hurdle was behind them.

She sighed heavily and waited. The something else didn't come.

"One problem at a time, Lord," she mumbled after the phone call ended. The wooden table caught her head. Instantly, her thoughts returned to Brandon as she turned and glanced at the panda bear sitting there smiling at her. She swiped at the panda's nose, remembering Brandon kissing it after the manager unlocked the arcade vending machine and handed it to him.

Philip had purchased over twenty dollars in tickets. A fair trade. But not one Jennifer expected after Brandon removed his cap. Perhaps Brandon figured doing so would improve his chances of winning. The manager immediately noticed Brandon's thinning hair.

Once Brandon played all his chances attempting to win the bear, the manager opened the kiosk and handed him the largest panda remaining on the shelf. Jennifer and Philip smiled and shook the manager's hand. That assisted win called for Brandon's favorite dessert.

She waited until her family returned to the booth. A bit uncomfortable at the beginning of her fourth month, she stood up and stretched.

"The twins don't have the trait for his type illness." Jennifer's open arms embraced Philip as she buried her head in his chest, releasing tears. They'd made the decision to get pregnant in spite of each side of their family's protests.

"We'll deal with each situation head on. You were already stretched to the limit like a rack being pulled in different directions. Now that the babies are fine, we can concentrate on Brandon's health. And don't allow any negative comments to diminish our happiness."

Philip hoped, but knew it wouldn't be easy. No matter the outcome with Brandon, they'd face his situation together.

Two things positive they celebrated that day: The child they already had, his year in remission. And the children they would have, their cancer-free trait diagnosis.

Welcome back to my freewrite prompt story for this week. The photo that is the subject of the story spoke to me about a happy time at a place where toys are given out:

Describe what you see.
A large black and white panda bear sitting on a stool. Three drinks sit on a table, together with a large slice of cheesecake. Additional chairs probably for grown up. People are vacant from the space.

Describe what you feel.
A child or children are taken to a play arena, probably an arcade to have fun. Someone won a large panda bear.

Write a story or poem about what you think is going on. I leave with you my story for: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 1/18/24.

A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 1/18/24.

A phone call can make a big difference in a person's life. As the queen of suspense, you deliver the tension and suspense very well. 😄 Any expectant mother in Jennifer's position would be anxious. Thankfully the call brings good news!

Sometimes we have to learn to embrace the balance between the joy and worry that life often presents. So this young family deserves the celebration that follows and so does Brandon deserve the stuffed panda. Beautifully written as always. A family united in the face of a challenge will conquer it! Well done. Take care and have a wonderful day. !PIMP 💕

You know @kemmyb. You are certainly correct in that a phone call can be devastating or uplifting according to the message received. I'm pleased you liked my short story. I appreciate your kind compliment and gladly accept the "queen of suspense" title.

It's how a person handles news tells of their courage under stress in their lives. Family support and not divisiveness during times of stress is key to overcoming obstacles. In my story, the couple clung together and made decisions they felt right for them despite extended family objections. When one has a child doing through hardship, sometimes you have to filter out the noise to be able to connect with your inner strength to get you through the adverse situation.

Thanks so much for stopping by and viewing my story with your expert analysis. I appreciate your support and engagement.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

I wonder about the type of cancer Brandon has and the tests done on the unborn twin. I hope Brandon will live his life to the fullest and can be a child.

Thank you for sharing this, although heartbreaking, story.
