[ENG-SPN] The Sarmental Gate of Burgos Cathedral / La Puerta del Sarmental de la catedral de Burgos

It was the first doorway of the cathedral and also the one that, following the canons of exclusivity that were seen in previous architectural styles, such as, for example, in the sacred buildings of the so-called Asturian pre-Romanesque, reserved exclusively for the entrance, in this true philosophical abode - as that 20th century enigma called Fulcanelli would say - of the privileged ecclesiastical classes. We also know from the existing documentation that the execution of this magnificent element, both artistic and didactic, took ten years, in which the patience and creativity of the sculptor resulted in a customary poem, which, echoing of the metaphorical expressions of Christ, transmuted the raw stone into living stone.

Currently, the Sarmental Gate -also known as Bishops Gate or Sacramental Gate- is, possibly, the most popular and the most visited of the four portals, which, oriented towards the four cardinal points, provide the spirit the possibility of taking a fascinating journey, in symbolic imitation of the sun's journey through the sky, with the interior of this repository of keys and secrets being a whole new continent to discover, as well as another way to cultivate perspective and get closer to something so sublime to attain, as is, after all, that utopia we call Knowledge.

Fue la primera portada de la catedral y también aquella, que, siguiendo los cánones de exclusividad que se constataban en estilos arquitectónicos anteriores, como, por ejemplo, en los edificios sacros del denominado prerrománico asturiano, reservada, exclusivamente, para la entrada, en esta verdadera morada filosofal -como diría aquel enigma del siglo XX, llamado Fulcanelli- de las privilegiadas clases eclesiásticas. Sabemos, además, por la documentación existente, que, en la ejecución de este magnífico elemento, tanto artístico como didáctico, se tardaron diez años, en los que la paciencia y la creatividad del escultor dieron como resultado un consuetudinario poema, que, haciéndose eco de las metafóricas expresiones de Cristo, transmutó la piedra bruta en piedra viva.

En la actualidad, la Puerta del Sarmental -conocida, también, como Puerta de los Obispos o Puerta Sacramental- es, posiblemente, la más popular y la más visitada de las cuatro portadas, que, orientadas hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales, proporcionan al espíritu la posibilidad de realizar un fascinante viaje, a imitación simbólica del recorrido del sol por el firmamento, siendo el interior de este depósito de claves y secretos, todo un nuevo continente a descubrir, así como otra forma más de cultivar la perspectiva y arrimarse a algo tan sublime de alcanzar, como es, después de todo, esa utopía que llamamos Conocimiento.
