[ENG-SPN] The Main Street of Palencia / La Calle Mayor de Palencia

In the vicinity of that 'beautiful unknown', as the people of Palencia call, commiseratingly, that true medieval jewel that is their splendid cathedral, whose foundations rise on a curious crypt, dedicated to the mysterious figure of Saint Antolín, an artery main street, crosses, from east to west, like a transept of an old Romanesque church, the old town of this other capital of forgotten empires, which, like Toledo, is also, ultimately, Palencia: its Main Street.

A street that, while preserving the old traditions related to lifelong commerce, stands out for the renovations carried out during the 19th century and a good part of the beginning of the 20th century, housing a notable selection of elegant buildings, designed, mainly, in Modernist and Art-Deco style, which determine the elevated position of the bourgeois society that settled there and that today, with its arcades and the visionary fantasy of its palaces, constitute one of the main tourist attractions of the city.

En las proximidades de esa ‘bella desconocida’, tal y como los palentinos denominan, conmiserativamente, a esa verdadera joya medieval que es su espléndida catedral, cuyos cimientos se levantan sobre una curiosa cripta, dedicada a la misteriosa figura de San Antolín, una arteria principal, atraviesa, de este a oeste, como crucero de una antigua iglesia románica, el casco viejo de esta otra capital de imperios olvidados, que, como Toledo, también es, en definitiva, Palencia: su Calle Mayor.

Una calle, que, aun conservando las viejas tradiciones relativas al comercio de toda la vida, destaca por las remodelaciones realizadas durante el siglo XIX y buena parte de los comienzos del siglo XX, albergando toda una notable selección de elegantes edificios, diseñados, principalmente, en estilo Modernista y Art-Deco, que determinan la elevada posición de la sociedad burguesa que en ella se instaló y que hoy en día, con sus soportales y la visionaria fantasía de sus palacetes, constituyen uno de los principales atractivos turísticos de la ciudad.
