En una época, donde la fe y los valores trascendentales parecen ambigüedades del pasado, mucha gente, pudiera darse el caso, de que carente de un proporcionado sentido de la espiritualidad, apenas lo valora, ni siquiera deteniéndose a admirar ese indudable aspecto artístico, que, no obstante, poseen, además del añadido de su historicidad. Pero en su tiempo, no sólo fueron el testimonio brillante de una sociedad, cuya mentalidad, aun primitiva en ciertos aspectos, poseía, también, por paradójico que resulte, la grandeza de convivir con lo sagrado, rindiéndose, incondicionalmente, a esa acertada reflexión de Bernardo de Claraval, que intuía la presencia inequívoca de Dios, en el trasfondo misterioso de toda Geometría.

Pero, además de templos, eran también santuarios, en su acepción más cercana de refugio, cuyos muros acogían, protegían y auxiliaban, no sólo a los cristianos y a los peregrinos que emprendían la que quizás fuera la mayor de sus experiencias trascendentales, persiguiendo algo más que una simple quimera, como piensan muchos, sino también, a cualquier viajero, que, sin importar raza, ni credo, ni origen, se veía necesitado de acogerse a su hospitalidad, cumpliendo con un ideal de caballerosidad universal, cuyos fundamentos principales, basados, no sólo en el amor fraternal, sino también en el respeto, parecen estar también fuera de lugar, en una época, que, a pesar de sus increíbles avances tecnológicos, parece adolecer, cada día más, de ceguera espiritual.
