THE FARMING SEASON

It gladdens my heart to share with you what farming season is all about. Please continue to read this post ,as I will reveal to you the mystery behind farming, thank you.

The farming season, refers to a part of a year whereby something so significant occurs. There are four divisions of a year, they are spring, summer, autumn and winter. Farming season is a period whereby a lot of people travel from far and near to their home town ,to give to the soil what the soil requires from them, and they as well will wait patiently on the outcome of their labor.

Here in the southern part of Nigeria, clearing of bushes and setting them ablaze began from early January to February and towards February ending, everything concerning preparation for farming is dealt with. The farmers will then wait for the rain to drop, so that the soil will be easier for cultivation.

This often occurs in the first week or second week of March. That is to say, in the southern part of Nigeria, farming begins fully in the month of March. Once the rain drops, farming is set. Weeding hoe, matchete and shovel are the major tools used in farming, while maize, cassava stem,, melon and pumpkin are the major crops that farmers cultivate on their farmland.

First step

Digging

The first step in planting is by digging a hole, with the help of a weeding hole. Thereafter , a machete is used to cut the cassava stems into various sizes. It is necessary that a good farmer, must have a small basin which he or she will use in packing the cassava stems, and a small plate that will be used in packing some cereals. Once that is done, the cassava stems and the rest will be dropped inside the hole that was dug earlier, and the sand would be use to cover the hole.

Second step

Few weeks after planting, the farmer will go back and check if there are weeds in the farm, and if any is found, he or she will go back and weed them so they won`t cause damage to his or her plant. Furthermore, once a farmer as succeeded in preserving the lives of those plants , the next step is to wait for the maize to ripe, and that often occurs between May and July. Then from December, some farmers have started harvesting their cassava, while some do not.

Moreover, farming season brings hope and happiness to the community. Without this season, there would be pestilence in the land . This is the most important season I cherish so much . I cherish it because it engages me in so much work, and at the end of it, there’s always something to show forth.

I still recall one of the farming season back then, when I was fourteen years of age. My mother asked me to accompanied her to the farm that she wants to go there and plant maize, but I insisted because she didn’t give me food before planning of taking me to the farm. I didn’t want to, but she still pleaded that I should accompany her ,that once we get to the farm she would give me food to eat, so I accepted. Getting to the farm, she forgot about the promised she made to me, she insisted that I should dig holes for maize and also plant them as well before I eat. I wept bitterly but no one came for my rescue. So I decided to obey her, I did as I was commanded before she gave me food. Few months later, I discovered that the maize I planted was as tall as the mountain without yielding any fruit, so I went back home and relate it to her, and she said that it occurs because I didn’t eat before planting the maize, I shouted.

In conclusion, I plead with you as parent or guidance who is involve in farming work to always make sure you feed your children very well before embarking on farming work, so that you will have a bountiful harvest , and those children will be encouraged to do more.
