FAREWELL

Source

The poem Farewell is about two female friends, who are madly in love with each other. They became friends right from birth and they vowed never to leave each other. As time went by, things began to change, one of them was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia and she was told by the medical doctor that she had just five days to reach out to her friends and love ones before her demise. She was pained, and she thought of so many things, including the good memories she shared with her friend, and the amount of money she spent just to make sure she survived. She thought of how to relate the sad news to her parents, and her bosom friend.
One fateful morning, she called on her friend who was with her in the hospital. She began to speak in the parable, but her friend insisted she should say it in a normal way, she was gripped with fear, and with tears in her eyes, she related everything to her . They hugged each other but she told her friend that peace is what she needs once she ceases to exist.

Pleasures and treasures a thing to behold,
Time and tide are the fastest work of nature,
Mountains and valleys falling aside,
With earthquake and darkness covering the earth.

The world is indeed a stage,
With many talents yet to unfold,
But death has chosen to tear us apart,
Oh! Irreversible work of nature.

Stoop low to see the unimaginable,
I will soon be snatched away by the cold hands of death,
And my bones would scatter around the earth,
Peace is what I need when I’m no more.

I’m wailing all through the night,
I’m caught in an unseen trap,
My light is about to be put off by an unseen being,
Farewell is all I could bid you, my friend.

My life is full of mysteries,
It’s encamped about by darkness which is so hard to resist,
But can’t my life be spared?
Oh! Death has cast its spell on me.

I’m returning to the dust,
Because I must be submissive to the power of nature,
We will meet again in a land far beyond.

Farewell! Farewell! Farewell!
