Book Review: Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

At about 240 pages this is an easy and engaging read. I finished it over the weekend. I remember first reading this book about 20 years ago, it being quite a bit different than the movie Blade Runner, which was inspired by it. The movie stands on its own as a masterpiece. Written in 1968, the book itself is more relevant now than it's ever been, as we continue to progress in artificial intelligence and robotics technology. If you've seen the movie Blade Runner, and you haven't read this book, I'd say you're missing out. The movie is only loosely based on the book. I don't really want to spoil the plot for those who haven't read it, but it's basically about a bounty hunter tasked to 'retire' several humanoid robots who had escaped from mars. During this endeavor he experiences an identity crisis of sorts, this is due to how humanlike the androids have become and his growing affinity for them. It takes place following a nuclear world war (2021), where the majority of humanity has escaped to other planets. This book is a must-read if you are a fan of the post-apocalyptic or dystopian genres. It's the type of science fiction that really forces you to think about the implications of technology. We are so much closer to this sort of outcome than Dick was 54 years ago.
