Carlos Castaneda o la sabiduría prehispánica

En mi avanzada juventud, inclinado a las corrientes de un pensamiento alternativo, no restringido a las religiones institucionales dominantes ni a las ideologías políticas simplistas, comencé a indagar, como supongo lo hicieron muchos de mi generación, en otros campos y autores. Fue así como, quizás por influencia del Dr. Jean Marc Sellier de Civrieux, me acerqué a la obra de Carlos Castaneda, antropólogo dedicado a la investigación de la sabiduría méxica antigua, fallecido el 27 de abril de 1998.

In my advanced youth, inclined to the currents of alternative thought, not restricted to the dominant institutional religions or simplistic political ideologies, I began to investigate, as I suppose many of my generation did, in other fields and authors. It was thus that, perhaps under the influence of Dr. Jean Marc Sellier de Civrieux, I approached the work of Carlos Castaneda, an anthropologist dedicated to the investigation of ancient Mexican wisdom, who died on April 27, 1998.

Durante mucho tiempo se pensó que no existía como persona, sino que era algo así como el nombre que servía como "tapa" de un conjunto de investigadores. Yo, personalmente, no tengo claridad al respecto todavía, pero eso es lo menos importante.

Para entonces leímos Las enseñanzas de Don Juan (1968), y luego casi toda su obra, como Una realidad aparte (1971), Viaje a Ixtlán (1973), Relatos de poder (1975). Lo recogido y expresado por Castaneda en sus libros es muy difícil de resumir en un post. Lo recomendable sería que los interesados en temas como estos trataran de descargar sus libros o, por lo menos, leer un poco más al respecto. Yo sólo me restringiré a unos comentarios de su primer libro, Las enseñanzas de Don Juan.

For a long time it was thought that he did not exist as a person, but rather was something like the name that served as a "cover" for a group of researchers. I, personally, am not clear about this yet, but that is the least important thing.

By then we read The teachings of Don Juan (1968), and then almost all of his work, such as A separate reality (1971), Journey to Ixtlán (1973), Stories of power (1975). What was collected and expressed by Castaneda in his books is very difficult to summarize in a post. It would be advisable for those interested in topics like these to try to summarize them. download his books or, at least, read a little more about it. I will only limit myself to a few comments on his first book, The Teachings of Don Juan.

"Don Juan" es el nombre que le da Castaneda al chamán yaqui en su largo encuentro con él, que le ofrece el acercamiento a la cultura y uso de los yaquis, a los hongos y plantas que tienen para ellos una función mágica y mística. Este es el caso de la "datura".

Del libro que recoge las observaciones y conjeturas de Castaneda, difundido como Las Enseñanzas de Don Juan, puedo citar a continuación:

Don Juan protestó por mi movimiento y recalcó claramente que un sitio significaba un lugar donde uno podía sentirse feliz y fuerte de manera natural.

(...) nada en ese mundo era un regalo: todo cuanto hubiera que agradecer debía aprenderse por el camino difícil.

(..)

Llegar a ser hombre de conocimiento era asunto de aprendizaje.

"Don Juan" is the name that Castaneda gives to the Yaqui shaman in his long meeting with him, which offers him an approach to the culture and use of the Yaquis, to the mushrooms and plants that have a magical and mystical function for them. This is the case of "datura".

From the book that collects Castaneda's observations and conjectures, published as The Teachings of Don Juan, I can quote below:

Don Juan protested my move and clearly emphasized that a place meant a place where he could feel happy and strong naturally.

(...)

(...) nothing in that world was a gift: everything there was to be grateful for had to be learned the hard way.

(..)

Becoming a man of knowledge was a matter of learning.
