What Really Motivates You To Hustle?

A few years ago, I was working a low-wage job, but my employer was consistent with payment, which was unusual in that industry. So, most people prefer to receive poor payment as long as it is consistent. Why is this? Bills are subscription-based; money is useless unless it can be used to pay bills.

The owner of this job wanted many of his employees to be loyal to the job rather than the pay; he wanted people to give more than they received, but we all know that the human body is limited, and no matter what drives your passion, the spirit is a passenger being driven by the (vehicle) body.

Passion & Money

In all honesty, every passion in the world is motivated by money.

There is a saying that doctors are the most selfless professionals because they are sworn to save lives, but 99% of the hospitals I have visited do not care about life if you can not pay when they want. There is no selfless profession anywhere.

In the movies, we often see US healthcare workers as heroes, willing to go above and beyond to save lives, but this is just Hollywood trying to sell the healthcare system; in reality, the cost of just getting an ambulance is unbelievable.

I understand the concept of work and fulfillment. I have heard a lot about having a job and being fulfilled, but unless you are financially secure, you probably will not care about being fulfilled.

The subscriptional and transactional nature of life is what makes people who they are. I understand that some organizations demand loyalty from their employees, but loyalty is typically purchased.

No one wants to give their all to jobs where they are underpaid and treated unfairly, because something has to drive loyalty, and most of the time, it is the ability to meet people's wages.

This is why asking people why they applied for a specific job is one of the most pointless questions. People simply apply for jobs because they want to eat, pay their rent, buy medicine, and live comfortably. Lying about loyalty and other issues makes people appear like merchants. In actuality, we're all merchants anyway.

Most days, after my morning prayer, I want to stay in bed, catch my breath, and reflect on my life. My health issues have disrupted my social life, and dealing with the chronic pain of losing my only sibling makes it even worse. It is as if I am moving without making any impact.

Sometimes I want to go somewhere far away to heal because it is difficult to do so with all the noise around, but bills have to be paid. Medical bills have eaten a chunk of everything I had, and there are many other bills I can't publicly talk about.

People would go hungry if they needed to hustle for fulfillment.

Why?

Many people are depressed and smiling while hustling because bills do not care how a person feels. The only way to be selective about how you make money is to be financially independent. In my life, I have never met anyone who is financially independent. Sure, I have met people who are financially secure, but it only takes one major health issue to send them bankrupt.

Being financially free means being able to bear the cost of any financial uncertainty without incurring consequences. Many people believe they are wealthy, when in reality they are only pre-broke.

Pre-Broke Or Rich?

In my opinion, pre-broke means being one large expense away from losing everything you own.

People sometimes see themselves through one-sided mirrors, believing they will never see the other side of financial uncertainty, but it only takes one small mistake for them to become unlucky and end up in big trouble.

Most of the time, I don't see the need to hustle, it's all futility anyway, but the need to have conviction or fulfillment when it comes to hustling is only a facade. It is not real unless you are financially independent. We are all committed to one or both of our financial responsibilities.

Being financially responsible and accepting is a selfless act; it is easier to avoid financial responsibilities, but having parents, relatives, and friends who choose to be financially responsible is a blessing. We live in a world where a large percentage of the population refuses to be responsible; being associated with such people is unlucky.

At the end of the day, no one wants to be fulfilled by hustling; they simply do so, regardless of their mental state, to pay their bills.

My answer to the question is "Responsibility", and that is enforced by this line in your post

People would go hungry if they needed to hustle for fulfillment

This wasn't always my drive. It used to be that I wanted a comfortable life, but I realized now that I want this life more for my family and friends than for myself. This has made my fear of failure even worse now because I don't just think of myself but what that would mean for my friends and family as well.

Yeah, I talked about responsibility towards the end of the post. If I actually didn't choose the he responsible for anybody, I'll probably have been able to just stop hustling and focus on healing medically and psychologically, but yes, most of the times all those struggles are mainly for people we consider family.

It has been a while brother. how is life with you? I agree with the fact that money drives passion. when I was in secondary school I remember that some of us didn't want to become a teacher because many believed there wasn't money in teaching even professors didn't receive much compared to their input. If we are working and the salary or earning doesn't commiserate with the task then someone will easily give up and look for a better opportunity

There's money in the right teaching opportunities. I know people earning a lot from being private teachers. However in the private school sectors owners of schools are exploiting individuals because there aren't jobs anywhere.

It is just the mentality. I work in the Ministry of Education too in Lagos. I agree with you that some private schools don't pay well. Here in Lagos, we have some private schools that pay teachers even more than the government.

Greetings @josediccus ,

Well said....appreciated reading your thoughts.

Have you checked out Peakd's 'Snap'? I posted a Watercolour there....would probably need to do it several times in order to see if it is a good venue.

To answer your query...what motivates you? ...How about good ideas, innovation based on a proven structure...on time tested principles.

Kind Regards, Bleujay

We do what we have to to survive, good or bad... I think most people in the world are one major disaster away from losing everything. It's sad but true. I'm lucky that I don't have to really hustle, but my side income off eBay does help cover some expenses which really helps. Life shouldn't be as rough as it is to survive, but I believe it always has been and always will be...

That's why people take less pay knowing they will get paid rather than go for the big bugs with a lot of risk of not getting paid...

I'm glad about the side stuffs. There was a time in my life I needed to work so much, and after over 7 years of 7 to 7, I think it really did a number on my health condition and I couldn't still feel that till today. Unfortunately, there's nothing to protect about life if we cannot pay the money that's needed to sort ourselves. Sometimes life becomes pay to live.
I took a lot of undeserving jobs, because one just had to survive

Money itself isn't the motivation. Freedom is, but money is what ultimately buys that. I'm not into expensive things and can live relatively frugally, but the ability to be able to do what I want with my time is what is most important for me.

This is quite an astonishing angle. Basically you're right. When people can be able to do what they want with their time, it makes them seem free. Like you, I'm a frugal person because my needs exceeds my wants.

That is the truth. People are doing a job to pay the bills, but even when money is sufficient, there are still people who work. I think it depends more on people's goal, but paying the bills is what most people consider most important.

You said it all. There are other reasons and motivation like you've pointed out, but being able to pay the bills is just about everything. Without bills people would prefer to do other things

This an amazing way of putting it, many financially rich or wealthy individuals are mostly one uncertain situation entering their lives before they lose their financially, especially in a world that's becoming more unpredictable and uncertain. Frankly, hustling is just a means to an end, I think this is the case for most people. So I like to focus more on the end, makes the hustling a bit more meaningful.

You're right. Furthermore I think hustling gets exciting when it brings financial dividends. Without this, I think people would feel unmotivated and even cheated to an extent. Most of the times people who don't have money would hope they don't have these problems that becomes unaffordable for them.

Right, that part about financial dividends can feel like or become an addiction, the carrot and the stick type of situation. But it only takes us so far before we get bored of the money game, especially after consecutive losses.

No matter how much people make much noise about following their passion bla bla bla, without making enough from that passion, to take care of bills piling up per hour, the person could just end up in frustrated.

The hustling is really not easy and the only reason I would have for doing it, is to pay the numerous bills and to have comfort. But this country makes it so difficult 😔
