Splinterlands Modern Bot Removal: The Effect On Gamification
The bot removal on splinterlands has been a dicey issue for a long time now and finally, it was removed from the modern format.
Here's why I think this happened. Modern format has always been the "go-to" format if you wanted to increase your chances of winning: the restrictions of some certain cards, the already established players on "wild", and the increased or better incentives to play in wild.
Some players cannot play with these restrictions on modern, their gameplay is already suited to using the best of their cards on "wild", however, a lot of players still compete in modern because of this reduced rate of competition and to be also versatile.
However, the bot removal on Splinterlands changed this
On paper, almost everyone wanted the bots to be gone but practically not everyone wanted this.
Why?
Having the bot generates passive income. People who are actively involved in the rental business get to earn their quid because the bots are smart renters.
More money for splinterlands because the more money renters make, the more they're inclined to keep buying assets and pushing them into the rental market.
On the in-game aspect, bots create speed when it comes to battling. It takes time for the system to match human players, the whole experience might lag and creates redundancy.
However, even with these upsides, the bots farms outrageous to the detriment of human players. So the compromise was to completely remove it from one format of the game and perhaps keep it running in the other and allow players to make their preferences.
Although I don't know if it'll also be removed from the wild format. Personally I don't see this happening.
This is because Splinterlands INC has been doing its best to keep the in-game economy afloat and this is because the bear market is already doing its damage.
In reality, the bot removal on modern has been a lukewarm experience for me.
I already stopped playing in modern over 4 months ago, but there was a huge difference in playing after the removal.
First of all, there was this exodus migration. A lot of regular wild players wanted to test the waters after the removal and ended up flooding wild with their massive and expensive deck.
What this meant was that the competition in modern skyrocketed massively and modern sort of became the new "wild" in this regard.
A lot of players wanted to know how Splinterlands felt without bots, and they did, it was a moment of realization. This massive Exodus handed me the biggest defeats I've ever faced since I started playing the game in 2021.
"Modern Gold" was saturated and is still saturated with level 5 and 6 summoners and these human players laid waste to players with level 2 and 3 summoners.
Will this competition reduce overtime?
Yes, I think it would.
Avoiding Gold or Diamond Modern will be the best decision anyone has ever made for themselves, especially if your summoners are not up to level 5 and your cards, level 4, 5, 6, and 7, why?
Because I believe it'll still be saturated before the hype fades away. However, it's great to see Splinterlands making that decision, creating a compromise while sustaining the bot economy without completely taking it off the table.
This now means more players might get to earn better rewards since the bot are no longer there in modern. I did experience this a little by earning 0.8 SPS, for playing in Silver 2 modern yesterday.
Will this be sustainable?
I don't know
Splinterlands is an emotional game, no surprise, this is the effect of the money or the prospective rewards that comes with it. Gold (modern) is virtually unplayable if you do not have enough skin.
This wasn't so. I remembered when I started playing in Gold, (modern) I could practically reach Gold one and still keep maintaining some crazy win streak. However, not anymore.
This is because the human players, the big boys are back to concentrate on modern, why not, the human player's incentive is finally being dished out on the modern format.

I don't think my win rate has changed that much but I generally only move into Gold during the last day or two of the season. Overall, I feel that things are a bit easier with the bots moving over to wild but the fights today were quite tough.
My win rate didn't change either. I feel that we're mostly going to see the changes happening subsequently. Another thing is that some wild players will now formally move to modern. This will even the competition and instead of it getting easier, it'll just be like we used to have in the past.
Yea. I think it will start getting tough but I don't think it will be as tough. Mainly because the people not using bots probably won't all have max level cards.
You're right though, however a lot is still going to happen in regards to this bot removal. Maybe the level of toughness will reduce
Man I started played Sl last month but then I can say after the bot removal I’ve experienced heavy loosing streaks. I don’t know if I should say it was easy to beat the bots in modern or as you said the big boys were playing in wild.
Just yesterday I went the whole day without getting a single daily chest chase I wasn’t getting win streaks and the rp I was getting for one win in 10 games was too little.
I wouldn’t say I like that the bots have been banned. This is because even though am a new player I did plan to eventually get a bot to play for me. But all in all I’ll see if it will still be the same after a while or after I level up my cards and summoners.
I have not been free lately to have a good judge of the removal of bots from Modern but I noticed it takes time now and then to match me with an opponent.
As for Wild, I think bots should be allowed there, completely eliminating bots from the game might not be favorable to the game.
Splinterlands have managed to establish a compromise in that aspect. it looks likely that they'll not be taking away the bots from wild, maybe they'll just allow people choose where they want to play
To me I strongly believe it will do the game so much good if the bots are actually gone
Well, we don't completely know. It's a dickey situation to be honest.
I think the move is good. but might be too early to tell. Having separate environments for bot vs bot and human vs human could actually be good. As you have mentioned botters still play a role as they can generate passive income.
Where I think it’s a bad idea to not have any bots at all is novice and bronze leagues. The newest and lowest players aren’t that high in number so how are they going to get battles if most are in silver and gold?
I need to check on my rentals to see how they are doing. I’ve been missing the game but can’t do anything about getting back into it for a while so hoping my rentals are keeping up at least earning me some DEC for the future releases.
This is understandable, I've actually questioned how the game is going to function without the bots there and to be sincere, i also thought as much. The people in the novice league might not be having it easy getting games, especially since bots aren't there to sped up the process.
Well I think rentals haven't taken any significant change dent or hit, I think you'll still earn your DEC as stipulated.

I like having the bots but yeah they're probably messing up the economy. I think a solution would have been to inflate the requirements to get into Silver and Gold over time and reduce the Bronze rewards so that some level of investment is needed per account.
Yes, I think reducing the bronze requirements would have been ideal, but the truth is that is that I think splinterlands Inc is prioritizing keeping the market afloat and probably making sure the money stays in the system, I think retention is now more of their priorities more than attracting more people.
Yeah if they can get the high-end players to stay or get the low-end players to invest more, I think it'll be a big win as we consolidate.

Well, I'm not one of those playing Splinterlands but I'm wondering why they should be dicey on not allowing bots on the game. It is something that should have been done since.
Is it until when bots take over the game

People are very happy with this update because people were fed up of not being able to win at all but now the reality is that a person will know how hard he is working and may or may not win the game.
A proposal has been made to ban the usage of bots in the wild too and also ban battle helper and I think this is not going to end well because some of the big investors do not have the time to play sl, and some have many accounts that they won't be able to play all by themselves alone and it is the bots that solve that issue for them...
Yeah, I also think it isn't going to end well. Some of the biggest investors are vested in the bots and splinterlands INC knows this. I think this proposal will not pass because it might shake the in-game economy. I also feel that the bots should be allowed to continue playing in wild because of the big investors.
yes, also banning bots from tournaments is a big red flag because that is where big investors make their money
