The eighth country to approach the Moon.

South Korea's lunar mission is already underway, on Thursday, August 4, a repurposed SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the KPLO mission, an acronym for Korea's Lunar Exploration Orbiter.

If all goes well, Korea will be the eighth country to put a satellite into orbit around the moon after Russia, the United States, Europe, India, China, Japan and Luxembourg. The Luxembourg thing clarified it a bit because it was more of a private mission. symbolic, it was a mini satellite of about 14 kilos that was launched in 2014 by means of a Chinese rocket and although it managed to reach the moon, its scientific contribution or lunar exploration was practically zero.

It is very different from what the Koreans whose mission has several objectives, to begin with, map the Moon with several cameras, explore a potential location to send a future mission that will reach the lunar surface, and the ship includes an instrument called ShadowCam, that has been provided by NASA and with which we will try to determine the amount of water ice that is hidden in the eternal shadow zones of the polar craters of the moon.

The ship weighing 550 kilos has a cubic shape and its power source is through two solar panels, it will still take four and a half months to reach lunar orbit, the entire mission will last a year, although it could be extended.
