My Other Garden Is Mind Altering Plants
Hey fellow Hivers! Hope your week has been treating you well. Thank goodness it is almost Friday right? Well at least for some of you. For me my Friday falls on Saturday, and my Weekend is Sunday. Working 6 days a week can be a drag, but hey I am not complaining. Bills have to be paid, and bad habits need to be supported;) However it does take away a lot of my time. Which is why I am so grateful I am able to have a garden here. Even if I had the space to do it at my Apartment, I would not really have to much time for it. It is not much of one, but I am enjoying it.
It has been 16 days since my last update, and so far so good. Maybe not as great as I expect, but now the sun is out longer, the growth is picking up. Above are the Watermelons that I found in my compost. In fact seeing these seedlings pop up is what motivated me to even do a garden here at work this year. You know what is funny is even up till yesterday there where seedlings still popping up! Every seed in the Watermelon I composted must of germinated.
I never grew any type of Melon before, and I thought this was cool. Looks like a Roller Coaster don't it?
So if you recall my last post I was having issues with Snails. My make shift barriers where no match for them, it is kind of funny I even have them there, but I digress. A customer left a thing of salt behind, yes you would shake your head at some of the things people store, but it was a win for me, and a loss for the Snails! It seems to be working, but there is an occasional Snail Trail left behind each morning. You would think that little sucker would not be to far away from the actual area it was just a few hours before, but best believe these things get around.
Next up we have the Tomaters. I forgot which Varietal they are. One is doing better then the other, and I suspect it was due to the Snails, or maybe the one that is doing better just likes what I have been feeding it. As you can see I put down a egg shell barrier to keep the Snails out, and it seems to be working. I can not eat enough eggs to keep up with what this garden demands!
Here we have an assortment of Peppers, and they are not doing so well it seems. Anybody who knows their peppers, please fill me in on what they love, and what they do not love. All comments appreciated.
I suppose I should fill you all in what exactly I am doing. This is all in ground on a spot that nothing but weeds grew. I then put some cheap garden soil, and some good compost that I made personally. I have fertilized once with a high N Worm Castings, and Bat Guano liquid fertilizer with a base of Molasses. The water I use is well water. The weather has been very inconstant for my area lately, with the nights being very cold. At least cold for here, 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Next up is the Glass Corn. The ones that my boss gave me seeds for. I could not resists to not grow these. I have to say these are doing good, and it also seems the Snails do not like these. I have not seen any damage, yet. However Salt was sprinkled all around the garden(Away from the edges, and plants).
So this is the area my boss envisioned where you wanted the Glass Corn, and also the Giant Sunflowers to grow. On the side of our fence that we look at all day...
The way I have it set up, is a Corn plant, with a Sunflower every 3 feet. 3 of each plant in total. I actually waited until the Sunflowers where a bit bigger, because apparently Sunflowers are one of Snails favorite food. A few weeks back I put a seedling here, and it was devoured the next morning! When I started this Garden I was worried about Gophers, but Snails have been the biggest issue so far.
So my last Compost is all finished. I have some more in the works though. The Compost is another thing I do here at work, since my space is very limited at home. I have to say I am very grateful for this, and enjoy my job. This Garden is more of a hobby for me, also a learning experience. I always encourage people to grow their own, whether it be cannabis, veggies, fruits, or even a flower for looks. It really is fun, and enjoying the fruits of your labor, even more so! Thanks for reading. Stay tuned, and see if I make it to the finish line, or maybe that darn Gopher will appear, and rob me of my Melons. Only time will tell........
Good Day Bro, nice garden you started... and i like your snail trail bridge corner or whatever that really is. Hahaha. About getting rid of snails, if you got Fern in your aera you can make a "fern manure" and pour around the plants. Or put the fresh leaves around them. All that works top best, salt isn't that good, since it can kill the plants. 😎
Hey bro! Yeah I was thinking the salt would not be the greatest. I will have to get a some fern next time I go into the mountains. For the tip! Thanks
Snails can be very destructive to crops and plants as they feed on them and also spread diseases and reduce crop yield... Having said that you can also get rid of them by using traps like inverted grapefruit halves or melon scattered throughout your garden these produce scent that attract snails so perceiving the scent would make them come out and then you trap or kill them when they arrive. However you've done a great job... keep it up
Lots of great tips! Thank you so much. Reaping them sounds kinda fun too
