Gardening Brings Me Joy!
Hello my fellow garden nerds! Hope everyone is doing ok, and especially in the gardens. I went out of town this weekend, and was so happy to see it rain here in Salinas when I got back! We needed it really bad. It has been 7 days since the last update. I put 2 of my Yellow Watermelons into the ground, and applied my harvested corn plants as mulch. Let's take a look...
The Beef Steak Tomato plant is on it's last week. Prior to this picture I picked around a dozen or more good ones. My wife has been making delicious red rice with them, and I also have been gifting some to my neighbors. I have to say giving away what you grow is maybe the most rewarding to me. It is also kind of funny since we live in an apartment, and my neighbors have also been in my backyard, they are kind of baffled when I gift them produce that I grew myself!
How did the corn mulch do?
I am very glad I stumbled upon something about using dried up corn leaves for mulch. TBH i should of got some hay to lay down at the start, and is something I will do from here on out. Especially here where we get little rain. However the only downside was the wind blowing it away. But this is an easy fix by throwing more dirt on top.
If you have been following along my garden log this year, you know that I have been having trouble with the pepper plants. Especially this Habanero! But throwing some compost down a couple weeks ago, and the most recent rain has it looking great!
And producing more fruit!
I was going to be happy with a few. Now not only will I get enough for myself, but perhaps I can gift a little as well. Do you like Habanero Pepper? Let me know in the comments:)
Re Veg?
I harvested the Chilacayote Squash last month, but one I left, and only cut back. This is that one! Not as big as it got before, but it is not that far behind. Really happy I did this, because when I learned this type of squash is better before it ripens, it was already to late. I should get a few or more.
The Glass Corn on the side of the property will soon be harvested!
Excited to see what colors they will bring, since each one is unique, almost like a finger print! What is even more exciting is I am sending seeds out to others to be grown. Hive is going to be bursting with color next grow season! So get prepared for the year of Corn Porn!
Did snails eat my Yellow Watermelons?
Very happy to see not a snail in sight! I was thinking they would come out due to the rain. Only thing is since melons do not like transplanting, they are still adjusting, but are now starting to rebound.
Taking my composting game to the next level!
So glad the compost finished in time. For a moment I thought I was not going to be able to apply any. My method does take a little more time. Or at least I assume it does.
I was very excited that my wife got me this composter! I just need to set it up, which will happen maybe tomorrow or Saturday. It is going to be cool to see the difference, and then compare. So be prepared for future posts on this subject. If composting excites you I hope you follow along, and especially follow @dynamicgreentk, for he is very knowledgeable on composting.
Now I just need to get this last Yellow Watermelon in the ground. Since there is no corn, or tomatoes growing, space is no longer an issue. On the other hand, being so late in the season I doubt they will get very big. I hope they do, but most likely they will grow the same size as the squash. We will see. I hope you all stay tuned, and follow along. Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your day! :)
Cant wait to grow my glass corn! Thank you bro! Composting is king!
Yeah it’s so cool and even cooler seeing it in person. Hanks for the comment bro!!
Awesome job. Chili lovers here.... we are growing about 5 varieties at the moment. I used to have a house with about 50 chili plants including Habanero but we moved... lol... i am starting to grow them all again now though... They look great!!!
Cool! I’ll have to check them out. Thanks for the comment:)
That corn is so cool looking. I would love to grow some and dry it out for popcorn.
I did not think of sending you some seed. I will send you some in time for next year if your down?
