Birthdays (Pinoy Celebrations) and the colour RED π₯³
Literally jumping for joy for another year - yay π
Birthday Salo-Salo (Feast/ Gathering) a couple of years ago π
It is a well-known fact that Filipinos love to celebrate birthdays. Ask every Pinoy you know and they'd respond that we are big in feasts, gatherings, food and the opportunity to gather together.
To be honest, it's one of the Filipino values that I am proud of - we love to be around family and closest circle of friends during special events of our lives. We love to share stories around the table and laugh and cry and together. For me, it is admirable that there's a strong bond amongst families.
Why am I sharing this? It's because I noticed that it almost seems impossible to be separate the love of food (and feasts) away from Pinoy families. We Filipinos love eating and enjoying the time spent together. One thing I took a note as well is this: the wearing of "something red" when a person celebrates his/her birthday.
In the photos of this post I'm wearing a red romper. This was taken a couple of years ago on my birthday. I am unsure when it started but I find myself wearing something red on my natal day - red shirt, red dress, red overalls, red pants, red skirt. It only stopped last year when I found it silly lol.
I was told by my mother that it's customary to wear red on birthdays because it somehow brings good luck to the celebrant. β€οΈ It's a cheerful and powerful color that "highlights" one is having a good day on his/her birthdate. Does your Filipino parent also share this same sentiment? I'd love to know your thoughts.
By the way, these photographs were taken because I wanted to document this day - so that I have something to remember by when I'm old. I begged (haha) for my sister Rica to take pictures because by this time we both worked in the same institution. I was so happy when she agreed - yay.
My thoughts on the wearing of red on birthdays - I am not against it nor I push the idea on to others. I do not really believe that a certain colour brings good luck - if you're lazy no luck will ever knock on your doorstep I reckon. And if you wish to wear red on your birthday and you feel really good about it - I'd be glad to see you sparkle and I might say "go get ittt".

Traditionally, Chinese people wear something red in their birthdays! Its the color of celebration and strength! Cancer season i just around the corner!
Ah when you think about it the Chinese influences in our country is very clear - in our food (like pancit and lumpia) and in our culture (example the wearing of red and the 13 Fruits every New Year's). Mao gyud ni ang rason ngano na kopya sa Pinoy ang pag sul-ob ug red ay π
hahahahaha. pati ang skin nmo pinachinese kahamis hahaha
I'm a Filipino but I don't celebrate my birthday lol! I'm not someone who likes gatherings really. Anyway, the romper does look good on you. I agree that we have to do the work in order to be lucky :)
I wonder what caught tatay's attention in photo #12 :D :D
Oooh. I guess you're one of the exceptions to this Pinoy birthday rule π
Thank you :)
Indeed - when you don't do anything then you won't really get "luck" in life ;)
Haha my Papa does not like picture-taking lol π
I know a lot and some of my friends too don't like celebrations :D :D
