What would You Consider A Goodnight Sleep?

Many people including myself have lived with the deception that a good night’s sleep means you falling asleep right away and staying asleep until morning.

When I have trouble sleeping and struggle for about an hour before sleeping and wake up way too quickly after, that's definitely what I consider a bad night.

But recent findings from some scientists say that healthy sleep is a very different thing all together. They said that a good sleep should involves cycles of sleep, including light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, which is when we dream.

Adults on average go through five to six sleep cycles each night, with brief awakenings in between the cycles. So that means you waking up more than ones to take urinate doesn't qualify as "you have trouble sleeping"

A good night’s sleep is not just about the hours of constant shutdown of your body. It’s about quality of sleep and what does quality sleep even mean? Well ideally, you should fall asleep within 30 minutes, wake up only briefly, and feel rested in the morning.

The best proof of you having a good sleep is if you feel energetic right after waking up. But if you find yourself tired during the day, I think it may be time to talk to a doctor or something.

Common sleep issues, like insomnia or sleep apnea affect many adults. I was at a science conference last month when the guest speaker asked the audience, "who's and trouble sleeping lately?" I was surprised to see that many hands up because I sleep like a baby and barely have trouble with my sleep experience.

These problems can disrupt sleep and leave you feeling drained through the day. I've experienced insomnia before and the pain is not even in the struggle to sleep but how the next day will feel like for you. You go through the next day feeling like you run a marathon with Usain Bolt. It's no easy experiment.

I've noticed that external factors such as noise or waking children, can also interfere with rest. So if you've got a sibling that makes noise during the night, I'm sorry for you and maybe you can try and talk to them about it because it could be the reason for your trouble sleeping.

I hope everyone has a goodnight rest and like I mentioned, if you wake up multiple times during the night and go back to sleep, it doesn't mean you have trouble sleeping. As long as your body feels good after you wake up all is well.
