There's A New Way to See the Heart of Matter

Before I start this blog, most people usually know the basic unit of matter are atoms. They're the tiniest but inside them are smaller particles called quarks. Good now I can move on.

It took a really long time for scientists to connect quarks and gluons to what we thought we already understood about protons and neutrons. In science class my teacher would teach these topics and the perspective is that they're from different worlds.

No honestly, for decades we were stuck thinking about these particles as separate

But you know eventually some smart ass will cracked the code just for a noble prize. Quarks and gluons are the actually fundamental building blocks of matter.

This changes how we understand matterand literally everything around us right now. Even a fifth grader knows that protons and neutrons make up the atomic nucleus but what's really existing in the nucleus for Protons and neutrons to be the way they are is the quarks and gluons. Not many people in this community are scientists or science enthusiasts so it'll be harder for me to explain the true impact of this new knowledge.

If quarks and gluons are now connected to what we observe at low energies, then that means every assumption we’ve already made about nuclear physics might need a second look.

So what are the implications of something this new. Science is very dynamic and as new information comes to us, everything that we see and believe could change and yet it was already like that since the beginning of time. So sometimes just because a theory is constantly proven by so many experiments doesn't mean you should take it as facts because there could be something we might have missed for decades or even centuries.

The good side is that this new understanding could probably lead to breakthroughs in nuclear energy or medicine

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if scientists start building different kinds of particle accelerators because of the new info. Science to me right now is just a bunch of unanswered questions that's why learning shouldn't stop because we're not there yet.
