There was a scientific research done about the human gut and I bumped into it this morning. After reading it I started thinking about how little attention we give to something as important as our gut. I’ve always believed that what happens in the gut affects everything else in our body, but I had no idea that gut microbes could play such a direct role in a situation as complex as autism.
It makes sense if you think about it though, the gut and brain are more connected than we realize.
In this scientific research, the researchers found a link between gut bacteria in infants and a diagnosis they did of neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and ADHD.
What that means is we'll be able to predict a condition years before it even shows up, just by analyzing what’s going on in the gut of a person. We're talking about being able to find differences in gut bacteria as early as birth.
I'm only wondering how many families could have benefited from this information if we’d known it 2 decades ago.
However, breakthrough can be risky to some point. It's cool how we can use this information for early screening which helps kids get the right support but what about overdiagnosis?
There could be that risk of turning gut imbalances into a sure prediction when it might just be one factor among many other things. With such a mistake, the doctor might give wrong treatment. This could also lead to unnecessary interventions before a child even shows signs of developmental challenges.
I don't think we've gotten to the stage where gut microbe screenings can be routine yet and we definitely shouldn't rush it.
