Memory Loss Solution Technology Coming Soon
There's a lot of great technological advancements in our era and things keep getting weirder and weirder each passing year.
One thing I love about the scientists of the world is their relentlessness when it comes to finding solutions to life's problems.
For a while now, scientists have been on a mission to help people with brain and memory loss issues. With this new experiment, research and testing, I believe they're getting closer and closer to a possible solution.
Imagine a situation where you're able to switch on a memory in your brain and change how you react to something even if that "something" isn't there at the moment. It's more like being able to give yourself a memory of something that never even happened. It's a bit scary for me because I'm thinking of the possible danger such an innovation can cause.
If you give a memory of a crime to someone and that person starts to feel guilty of commiting the crime, that could lead to innocent people getting punished. But maybe I'm overthinking this
But if you look on the bright side, it could lead to a lot of solutions for patients.
This is exactly what researchers at Johns Hopkins University have just done, well, not with people but with mice. The poor mice have suffered a lot of lab tests but that's been our way of ensuring that humans can take the drug or treatment.
During their research, they ended up finding a way to reactivate memory circuits in mice and after doing so, the mice started seeking shelter as if there was danger, even though no threat was present. They literally put a new memory in the mice that caused the mice to think it was under threat.
By stimulating neurons in two areas of the mouse brain which according the research is the nucleus accumbens and the dorsal periaqueductal gray, the researchers managed to recreate the memory of shelter-seeking behavior in the mice.
It's definitely some type of brain-hack, where they can tap into an old memory and make it feel real again.
It’s very cool because it shows that our brains are wired not just to store memories but to turn them on when needed, sometimes even when they’re not. I guess that's why when you experience pain from touching something hot, you remember that experience whenever you see hot stuff and you avoid. It's the body's way of protecting itself.
I'm thinking this would be expensive for most people though if it happens soon. Imagine how much a Doctor will charge you to help you regain memory loss. What if you lost the password to your crypto wallet and forgot it and you desperately need it. If I was the doctor, I'll probably charge you half of whatever is in your wallet. I'm just joking, it's unethical but it'll definitely be expensive for most people.
What makes this an important innovation here is the potential this has for helping people with memory loss, especially those dealing with Alzheimer's and perhaps amnesia. By figuring out how these memory circuits work, we might be able to slow down or even reverse memory loss one day.
Instead of simply managing symptoms, we could be looking at ways to actually fix the main problem regarding memory loss. I honestly can't wait to see how far they go with this particular research.
