In a very shocking turn of events and this has to be the most surprising thing I've learned this week so far, our scientists have just made a new discovery that could totally change our current understanding of the Earth’s core, literally.
From school and universities, we’ve always been taught that our planet has four main layers which of course is the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core but new research made is showing us that things are a lot more complex beneath the surface of the earth.
What the scientists did was to analyze how seismic waves travel through the Earth, and when they did that, they were able to detect what could be an inner core within the inner core we already know of.
This is almost like you trying to peel an onion, thinking you’ve hit the center and then you end up finding another layer inside, more like a whole new center of the onion or in this vase the Earth. That’s what’s happening here. They had to use some very advanced technology and algorithms to match seismic data with different models and they stumbled upon something unexpected.
There were variations in the way waves move through the core of the Earth which is what suggested to them that there’s an extra layer down there.
We already had knowledge of how planets are formed and how it evolves but the thing is that we had that knowledge being aware that it's only 4 layers. So now that we've discovered an inner layer after the inner layer we already know, this may disrupt what we originally thought about planet formation.
The information their gathering about the wave patterns is that it might be telling us about different cooling events in Earth’s deep history. It’s almost like the core has its own timeline that we’re just beginning to figure out. Of course, more research is needed for us to really confirm everything, but this is definitely a huge leap forward in understanding what’s happening miles below our feet.
This new discovery might push us to rethink not just textbooks but how opinion of the planet as a whole. Earth has always kept some of its mysteries locked away, but now we're seeing a whole new side.
I'm very happy about this because the more we figure out about our home planet, the better the technology we can build to adapt and live better lives on the planet.
