The Dolomites: Tre Cime di Lavaredo

(Edited)

Have you ever slept in your car at an altitude of 2,320 m / 7,611 feet? Well, on September 19, 2022 I and quite some others have had the same idea :)

Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Dolomites - Italy

There is a huge car park at the Rifugio Auronzo, just besides the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen - Wikipedia: Tre Cime di Lavaredo), in my eyes the most iconic rocks not only in the Dolomites.

To get to this parking lot you have to drive 16 km / 9.94 miles on a beautiful toll road from Misurina at about 1,756 m / 5,761 feet up to the Rifugio Auronzo at 2,320 m / 7,611 feet.
It was a Monday and I thought on a work day there wouldn't be many people, but I was wrong, because at 11am the road was already closed due to full parking lots. So I came back in the late afternoon because most people had left by then and they opened the road again. I paid 60 Euros toll for staying up there over night (30 Euros until midnight and 30 Euros for the second day).

As said above, the road is beautiful and I enjoyed driving, but you could have bad luck and a slow camper drives in front of you what would make the drive quite unpleasant because there are not many chances to overtake ... I've been lucky 😁

The image above shows the two gravel parking lots which are meant for campers. My van is on the upper one - pleasant view towards the Cadini group - Cadini di Misurina, isn't it?

The weather was awesome for hiking and boring for photography ... just blue skies and no clouds, no drama in the sky.
Nevertheless, after parking my van I went for a little hike to the other side (north-west) of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo to see and photograph them at sunset. The setting sun lit the mountains beautifully but I wished there would have been some clouds around.

In quite a distance I could see the Dreizinnenhütte - Antonio Locatelli Hut.

The Cadini Group - Cadini di Misurina was looking awesome in the evening light but some clouds around would have added so much to the scene.

The night in my van was cozy, but only inside the sleeping bag. The next morning all the little puddles around have been frozen, what means it was quite cold not only outside the car but also outside the sleeping bag 😉

I got up at 5am and have been one of the first hiking on the path around the 3 big rocks. Only two others have been up and they hiked another path. It was a freezing but beautiful morning, almost cloudless still though.

On my path to my first viewpoint I have taken some photos of the mountains ranges in the south where the soon rising morning sun has begun to paint the clouds and the mountains in lovely colours.

At the Cappella degli Alpini I left the path that went very close to the Tre Cime to get a better overview of the mountains. There were still no clouds around these huge rocks, but in the warm morning light they looked awesome anyway.

This rocky mountain is in the north of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and called Schwabenalpenkopf - Torre dei Scarperi.

The little lakes on the northern side of the Drei Zinnen would give amazing reflections, but it was still quite dark because the sun was on the other side and it was windy.

A while before I have been back at my car I have taken an image of a mountain range of which I have no idea what it is named and if you remember the images above, I have already taken a photo of it the night before 😎

Search Google for hotel+misurina+reflection and you will find tons of images of the hotel at the Lago di Misurina in the image below. When the light is right, there's an amazing reflection of the hotel and the mountains behind in the lake ... photographed a million times.

So, that was it for today - I hope you've enjoyed my post and the photos I have taken during the hike a little bit.

When you get very angry, make a very hot cup of tea. Then when you take a sip, it will burn your tongue and the pain will allow you to forget your anger. Maybe Confucians said this 🤣 !LOLZ

Just the post's performance should tell you that the photos are top drawer quality. But then again, what would an Austrian mountain goat know about quality? 🤣🤣🤣

A 31C Sunday and now it is dark and raining hurrah!
Hope your day was also good my friend.

Btw. We have 4 power cuts tomorrow and it's going to be difficult to organize a visit to Hive during that lot.

That's a great advice and I will certainly tell it to my colleagues when they get angry, but I am not willing to do it myself and calm down by making a loud !LOLZ instead 😂

Yep, you might be right, but we do know much about the quality of grass that grows on the mountains - have you ever compared milk from a cow that grazes in the valley and one that spends the Summer on a mountain pasture? The difference is immence because not only the grass is different, but also there are herbs and other stuff that lets the milk taste awesome 😋

As you can see / read, a lazy Sunday makes my mind go wild 😂

We are having about the same weather as you, just the temperatures are a little bit lower at about -1 C.

4 power cuts in a day - is there any time with power left anyway?

Hahaha, the idea is to get the mind off the focus anger. We center our minds also on pain and when Marian shows me a scratch on her hand, I slap her hand and the surprise of the slap makes her to forget the pain of the scratch. So it is similar to you making a loud 🤣 !LOLZ

Indeed I have tasted the difference and the meat of a karoo goat also tastes different from the meat of the goats on the farms, as the Karoo goats eat fynbos. A spiced variety of desert bush.
So a mountain goat with a crazy mind will not last long here before its meat goes onto the fire 🤣🤣🤣

Hahaha, a mountain of difference between 31C and -1C methinks 😜
The rain has just started right now!

Cheers and thanks.

I think there's even a saying about such a thing to make one forget the actual pain by surprising him with another pain, but I can't remember it 😂 !LOLZ

Maybe, but you have just told me the secret, so I will eat only things that will make my meat disgusting 🤣

Today is nice weather - I can see the sunshine when I look out of the office window, bu tit's still at about -1C or so 😁

There might be an old saying like that Hannes and to me it makes total sense, so I just have a funny application of it as I like to see the surprise when the other pain is inflicted. A sudden slap on a finger that has a scratch could almost end up in a divorce 🤣 !LOLZ

Hahaha, never meant, but it is a good reply 🤣

Oh shame, you certainly have a very cold sun and you must send your sun to Africa to learn how to burn methinks 😉

Beautiful photography Hannes. These Dolomites are awesome. What a great hike you had and you braved the cold. Your van makes it convenient to stay overnight in nature.

We had a dusting of snow on the ground this morning and chill in the air…guess winter is upon us. 🥶

It has snowed here too, but only a little bit and the Sunday is more gray and wet, so I have decided to stay at home today. Next week is gonna be much colder, says the weatherman, but we'll see because he has also predicted a ton of snow a few days ago 😁

Thanks a ton for your kind words, the reblog and for everything, dear Jo, wishing you also a wonderful Sunday 🤗🌞

Wow. Are you sure you haven't space-traveled to Mars to take some of those? :)
I really need to push the Dolomites up my to-go list, awesome photographs, kudos!

Interesting to see you own Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM. As I own one Canon EF 100-400mm F / 4.5-5.6L IS II USM it would be interesting to side-compare some shots with them.

Haha, thanks my friend, and you're right when you compare the Dolomites with Mars - so many rocks and stones 😁

The Dolomites are awesome and worth a visit or more visits, but be aware that millions of other people and photographers think the same 😉

I don't think the RF 100-400 is comparable to the EF 100-400, but I love it. I'm switching to RF lenses because then I don't need an adapter for my EOS R. The RF 100-400 is quite cheap compared to the other RF lenses, lightweight and sharp enough for my needs.

I have just joined the "Photographic Society" community 😁

Awesome! :)

I don't mind the other photographers and tourists, as I have my tricks to make my pics "unique" :)))

Interesting, what you're saying about the lens. The price tag isn't always a criterion for better quality, for instance, I have Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 but I think shooting at f/1.8, the 50 mm f/1.8 lens produces better images, and that is really weird as the f/1.4 version costs triple...

I try to avoid places where more than a few others are - prefer places which are not so accessible 😉

That's right, a high price doesn't always mean the lens is better than a cheaper one - if Sigma had RF lenses I would shoot with them because all Sigma lenses I have had before were great.
I have the 50mm f/1.8 but I haven't used it a lot yet.

So do I, whenever it is possible :)

With regards to Sigma, I had the chance to test-drive two of them, both from the Art series.

50mm f/1.4
and
24mm f/1.4
with my Canon5D Mark III body.
I felt in love with the 50mm, the images were so sharp and the focus was exactly where I wanted it to be.

However, the 24mm was a total disaster. It was during a one-week photo-trip to Greece, so imagine my frustration to have had to delete almost the half of the files on my return.
After that for some time I was personally asking all the people I know who use Sigma, and all they told me they had troubles with their lenses, some had to go calibrate them to their bodies. My stat showed 50% trouble in total with lenses. This was about 6-7 years ago though, so I guess Sigma improved that ratio since.

(Edited)

Maybe I was just lucky with my lenses 😉

I have the 105mm macro lens and I love it, although I might switch to a RF lens one day, but just because I don't want to use the adapter anymore.
And I have had the 100-400mm and the 150-600mm Contemporary lenses. Both were great lenses, but the 150-600 was too heavy and I changed the 100-400 for the RF version from Canon because of the adapter and the weight because I take the long lenses always with me, just in case.

That's an excellent point, actually. I sometimes leave my 100-400 mm even when traveling abroad, as it weights almost 2 kg! :D Walking ten kilometers per day with a ten kg backpack for a few consecutive days is too much :)

My RF 100-400mm weighs only 635 grams and that's great, but my backpack is still often over 15 kg heavy because due to the lighter lens I take other things with me which I often even don't need 😅

This is what I don't like the most about mirrorless.
I have Canon EOS M5 and it "eats" two batteries a day. The worse aspect of that is that when I finally arrive at my place to rest, I cannot go to bed before the first battery is fully recharged so I put the second one to charge.
While with my EOS 5D Mark 3, one battery sometimes last for 3 days until it needs recharging.
Not sure how the situation is with the R series.
But for M5, it is a disaster...

!PIZZA

The batterie of the EOS R last about 300 images and two batteries are most times enough for me for a day or two. I always have 4 batteries (3rd party) with me and I recharge them as soon as I'm home, but I also could recharge them in my van if a trip takes longer.

Thanks for sharing that insight. I suspected that, as it seems mirrorless cameras of all brands suffer from that same issue ;) Compared with my 5D where I bring usually two and I almost never get the backup one from the backpack. With the two exceptions when I was mass shooting long exposures of the Northern Lights at temp below the zero. In Norway it was about -20 C and I didn't need the 3rd battery either ;)

I hope that new Sulphur Natrium technology will do the battery side much better in a year or two :)

"Tre Cime di Lavaredo - Italian Dolomites" with gentle wisp of cloud curling above really superb photograph, not that the others are not....

We stayed a night in the region in 1974 with my Mom and sister on a coach tour not sure which hotel, long time ago. I remember loving the Dolomite mountains for unique formation.

The Dolomites are really unique ... my father has been on top of all three peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and he says they are no mountains, just rocks, huge rocks 😁 !LOLZ

I haven't been in the Dolomites for many years until last Summer when I got the van. And since then I have been there 4 times - it's just a 3 hours drive. In tourist season there are masses of people andI think I'll avoid this time next year, or choose places which tourists don't find 😉

Thanks a million for your kind compliment on my photos, Joan, I do hope you will have the chance to return to Europe and the Dolomites one day. Have a wonderful Sunday 🌞

Mountains are like jagged teeth straight up into the blue sky which makes them feel so tall which they are!

Your father must have enjoyed hiking and rock climbing when younger, my father-in-law was another who escaped to climb in the Drakensberg as often as able when younger.

Tourists arrive in droves, not pleasant when more local people are trying to enjoy peace and quiet. Must be honest in saying they never stopped long enough in any one place to experience place fully need to spend a week or two for that.

Sounds like you starting to enjoy quick hops over the border and explore more knowing your accommodation is a lot more convenient.

Oh, they are tall and the highest of the 3 is 2,999 meters high with an about 500 meters high straight up rockface (north face).

My father has been hiking and climbing all around the world until his late seventies.

The worst thing is when the busses arrive and hords of people in shorts and flip-flops jump out. When I see such I escape as fast as I can - no mountain is too high and no slope too steep 😂 !LOLZ
That's also a reason for me why I get up well before sunrise - the tourists sleep longer and this is the most quiet time 😁

Yep, I have all I need in the car to spend a couple of days anywhere - one night is usually enough for me though 😊

Quiet walks along lower paths for me enjoying the meadows, climbing and steep hiking a thing of the past, unless something very tempting up there to witness first hand..., no I doubt I would make it 🙃

Any visit now I would stay at least 3 days in each town to take in more and learn more, both earlier trips too fast to stop long enough to absorb fully, touring is lovely to simply have a nibble. Staying in a region for longer more bite size to settle and enjoy!

For the same reason I also try to see as much as possible when I'm somewhere, but I am trying to slow down because it's better to enjoy one beautiful place than to look and rush to the next place, and while you rush you have already forgotten what you have just seen. My niece is looking into her little one starting grade R which is one step before grade 1 next year, approximately US$445 per month, it's crazy what a good education costs.

Are these costs for university or normal school? I have no idea about "grade R" or "grade 1", sorry 🙄
Uni costs here about 60 Euros a month, but my daughter's Uni is a private thing and costs 500 Euros a month + the costs for her apartment and such ... my wife's salary goes directly to our daughter 😅 but we are glad that she has found a job in a Pub so she gets some money for herself. But she's a good girl and it's all worth it.

And I agree with you - education shouldn't cost anything, and the mandatory school is free here😁

Grade R is pre-school around age 4 - 5 years old, Grade 1 is start of schooling around 6 - 7 years of age.

Schools structured on Rural schools where some financial assistance is given, Suburban schools monthly fees are paid, Private schools very expensive to say the least.

Universities run on similar structure although ongoing fight for education should be free or more assistance given to disadvantaged children.

Education and Health Care have gone backwards over here both stood in very much higher esteem thirty years ago.

Oh, these schools are completely free here - the first 9 years at school are free, and even later you don't have to pay until you graduate and go to Uni, unless you choose a private school.
Education and health care are very good in Austria / Europe.

That's the best you can do, but even that is hard - after seeing all the stupid things that are happening here for many years, I still often wonder why or how such can happen 😏 !LOLZ

I do understand what your saying about some clouds would have added to the views, but the light and quality of your shots are outstanding and so beautiful

It was also the time of year when all flowers have withered and the green colour of the grass was gone that I didn't like much, but this place is awesome at anytime and I thank you so much that you like my photos, JJ 😊

Hi @johannpiber,all the photos are great, this is the one that catches my attention the most, well, you say you take it before going back to your car, I like the way the mountains are reflected in the water, and even the color of the water, it is magnificent

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services but I may have to increase the 0.8% fee to 2.0% if I continue to be unfunded.

Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #244 or consider unvoting the HBD stabilizer explained below.

For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I will also redraft this proposal with more details (coming soon). I'm also looking for other funding sources.

Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner

If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.

  1. The bar to be funded is set by the HBD Stabilizer, the more votes that has, the more votes @v4vapp needs to be funded. If you want to reconsider supporting that proposal and unvote it, that would also help me (and others so you have to weigh this choice.)

Die Koordinaten (46.61324605354773, 12.292972957385011) brauchst du eigentlich nicht - einfach auf Google Maps nach Parcheggio Auronzo suchen und finden: https://goo.gl/maps/4ugV27Sji7bVMbQWA
