Your First Crypto Investment, Was It By Influence Or Research?

avatar

Haven gain some cryptocurrency knowledge over the years we often advise newer enthusiasts to do their research before investing in cryptocurrency.

Looking back at how we got on to crypto, did we put in the research or just jumped in based on the influence?

My First Cryptocurrency Investment

It was 2014, when I found out about Bitcoin, it was by chance, as I attended a Karatbars seminar (buying gold bars in small increments).

We often refer to Bitcoin as digital gold so the term was used back then I was presented with a trailer of Bitcoin: The End of Money As We Know It, and I liked the idea there was an immediate connection with me and Bitcoin and that was it.

in.png

I ended up investing in it without further research, it was more of being influenced by the mentors. So as far as research is concerned I didn't do that.

My research for Bitcoin followed after I got rekt. Fast forward to the present day and based on the shilling of tokens on social media, the same approach of investing in cryptocurrency without conducting thorough research is most dominant.

Time Spent On Research

From the compiled data by Bybit below we can see social media's influence on crypto investment as well as what friends share with social media the more dominance when comparing both.

BybitxTolunaJointResearchReport-5e44e7cf355184e247d67e63009d20c5.pdf - Brave 1_20_2023 8_09_15 AM.png
Source

We can take a positive from less than 2 hours and 3 to 8 hours of research and hope the numbers get better from there on. Perhaps conducting the same research in another 2 to 3 years might yield a better result in research being done before crypto investments.

BybitxTolunaJointResearchReport-5e44e7cf355184e247d67e63009d20c5.pdf - Brave 1_20_2023 8_39_33 AM.png

Another interesting data from the same source is the long-term approach when investing in cryptocurrency, which some of us learned the hard way, by getting into crypto with the hope of making quick money. Unfortunately, that approach often leads to getting rekt.
The result of the above data can be improved if we all approach crypto projects with a long-term perspective, and with such in mind also comes the desire to do thorough research.

Bearing in mind research doesn't eliminate risks but puts investors at a better chance of investing in sustainable projects rather than investing in hyped projects from social media that lead to loss of funds.

Like I told a friend keen on crypto the other day, always make sure you are in control of any crypto project you get involved in, which tells you to prioritize decentralization above centralized entities that have the power to shut you out of your account. Additionally, it pays to seek long-term projects than short-term gains that don't exist in the first place.

Not many of us started our crypto journey with the right approach and mindset but we learn along the way and that is what matters, it becomes a foolish act when we keep repeating the same mistake.

Same with me. Bought a little bit of Bitcoin back in 2018 since I heard of it and noticed the hype. After it came back to around 4k $ I thought it might be a god trade to buy a bit. If I had only known and bought more back then…🫣

I confess that I initially did a lot of research but I didn't invest; after some time and further research I decided to take the plunge.

The first real investment was actually Steem and it also paid off well since I managed to collect before everything went to hell... but there it was a question of a bit of luck, I admit it.

I don't know why I have never held large sums in bitcoin for example and have always invested in other projects; with this market I thought of strengthening my positions a little but originally I often focused on something else.

Maybe because in the early days of Bitcoin, like when it was worth 50 cents, I thought about buying a good amount and then I didn't have the courage... I was also a different person from now, it's certainly a big regret that I could take with me since probably that it would have been a life changing purchase.
I prefer to think that it had to go like this to allow me to mature as an investor and achieve certain awareness.

Probably in those days I would have pulverized all those earnings in a short time by spending them on bullshit like you do when you win a lottery but you don't know how to manage your money.

Nice reflection and nice post, thank you!

Lol thanks, your comment got me smiling

Nice to know you were on the older chain Steem, I started my Hive journey there.

As for Bitcoin, I feel the same, I knew about it as early as 2014 and could afford a BTC back then but invested it where I lost it. Only if we had bought and just seat on it but like you said that made me laugh we might have blown it like a lottery.

The space has impacted some of us to be smarter and wiser and that can impact our lives a great deal going forward.

Eh eh yes I started from there and after I left I happened to come back to take a look to see how Steemit had reduced it made me sad... but then I discovered Hive and my joy returned! ;-)

Sadly, I experienced the whole JS crap, thankfully we moved onto a better chain with consistent development with a sense of belonging and responsibility.

One of the most difficult things to internalize is that these projects must be assumed as a slow-cooked dish, hence the best chances of success along the way. The other thing is not to get carried away by the sensationalism of traditional social networks that generally flood the web with a lot of false or unfounded information.

Undoubtedly the best thing about Hive is its community. In general we have learned a lot about these important concepts.

PS: how much was the BTC for 2014 :)

slow-cooked dish

I wouldn't explain approaching a crypto project any better than the way you put it, at least that should send the message home.

I agree with you, Hive has impacted us in lots of positive ways, we tend to have a different approach to the crypto space instead of chasing "when moon"

In 2014 a BTC I always remember was around $300-$400

For me it was research first. The influence was from listening to the conflicting ideas that was said about crypto. One said it was revolutionary while the other said it was pure scam. I had to personally do research first before I began investing into crypto. At first, I just invested a bit to test the waters and then continue from there.

Great that you took the right approach to do the research, it puts you in an enlightened to get started. Some like me had to get burnt first before taking a step back to read up.

I just invested a bit to test the waters and then continue from there.

And the you fell into the rabbit hole as well.

Guess what Joe
It arrived today 🎉🤩😎📡
I just finished setting it up and I am connected to the internet. The device is still scanning for 6 hours obstructions and will advise after, but think it is set up in the best location for now.
The download speed is 190mb and upload just over 40mb 😳
Much more than I expected to get. Wooohhhooooo so happy!
Now I can catch up with Hive and work. And start posting this week again. Next to organising paperwork and unpacking 📦📦😉

I will upload the photos from the camera to the laptop tomorrow. So I can start editing… So hopefully very soon (this week at least part 5 of the journey) new updates follow. I will post the setup from Starlink as a market Friday post 📡📦😎

Have a wonderful evening further Joe 👋🏻😊

Great post bro, I still remember seeing ads of Karatbars on facebook. I didn't get involved in that but I remember being rekt a small amount of BTC, I think it was about $50 by a company called USI Tech, they were selling shares which were supposed to appreciate with time but the company shut down with investors BTC .
That's why decentralization and controlling one's own funds is highly advised. I learned my lesson back in 2016, it's simple...not your keys not your coins. The recent crypto company collapses of FTX, Celsius , 3 arrows have spoken very loudly. Never trust centralization.
Thank you for sharing and enjoy the weekend ahead :}

Wow, interesting, I was sold on the Karatbars thing and even had my Facebook page lol, and also bought a Bronze package, the recruiting of people sucks.

In a similar way I lost my BTC, these experiences made us learn the hard way. That is why I prioritize decentralization. I hope the future will be less loss of funds to scams and that people stick with long-term sustainable projects.

Have a wonderful weekend bro.

Crypto isn't quick money and it takes work to get that money. It doesn't change but there are a ton of scams out there in the cryptoverse because there are far fewer regulations here right now.

Approaching crypto knowing it is not to get rich quick, will help in falling for those high yield projects that are nothing but scams.
