Slavnosti svobody v Plzni 2023

This year, Terezka, @zenuska and I again visited the Freedom Celebrations in Pilsen, specifically a convoy of vehicles, the Convoy of Liberty. This traditional event takes place on Sunday in Pilsen on Klatovská třída as a tribute and thanks to the members of the allied armies who liberated the city from the German occupiers in May 1945.
Klatovská street, this otherwise very busy road is closed to passenger traffic and trams, and the whole of it then belongs to the people welcoming the convoy of historic vehicles of the American army and Belgian troops. This year, for the first time, veterans are unfortunately missing, all of whom are around a hundred years old and many of them are no longer alive. So they participate in convoys only remotely and through their family members, sons, grandsons and wives, who carry photos of them from their youth in vintage Jeeps.

Letos jsme opět s Terezkou navštívili Slavnosti svobody v Plzni, konktrétně konvoj vozidel, Convoy of Liberty. Tato tradiční akce se odehrává v neděli v Plzni na Klatovské třídě jako počest a poděkování příslušníkům spojeneckých armád, kteří osvobozovali město v květnu roku 1945 od něměckých okupantů.
Klatovská ulice, tato jindy velice rušná komunikace je uzavřena pro osobní dopravu i pro tramvaje a celá pak patří lidem vítajícím konvoj historických vozidel americké armády a belgických jednotek. Letos poprvé bohužel chybí veteráni, kterým je všem kolem sta let a plno jich již nežije. Konvoje se tedy účastní pouze na dálku a prostřednictvím svých rodinných příslušníků, synů, vnuků a manželek, kteří na dobových Jeepech vezou jejich fotografie z mládí.

Terezka had to wait over an hour to experience the expected welcome of the soldiers. She waited. At the head of the column, the Sherman - the legendary tank of the Second World War - arrives with dignity.

Terezka vydržela čekat přes hodinu, aby zažila očekávané vítání vojáků. Dočkala se. V čele kolony důstojně přijíždí Sherman, legendární tank II. světové války.

More and more vehicles follow. The column has no end. Cars, pedestrians, motorbikes, music and Pilsen Scottish pipers The Rebels Pipers.

Následují další a další vozidla. Kolona nemá konce. Vozy, pěšáci, motorky, hudba i plzeňští skotští dudáci The Rebels Pipers.

Members of military history clubs think of period details. Mustaches, cigars and car equipment are perfect. We can even find a live hen in a cage here.

Členové klubů vojenské historie myslí na dobové detaily. Kníry, doutníky i vybavení vozů je dokonalé. I živou slepici v kleci tu dokonce najdeme.

Bolevec peasant women in folk costume must not be missing.

Bolevecké selky v lidovém kroji nesmí chybět.

And lilacs. A symbol of liberation. People decorated their cars with them in 1945 and today they bloom again just for them.

A šeříky. Symbol osvobození. Jimi lidé v roce 1945 ozdobily vozy a dnes opět vykvetly jen pro ně.

The line of vehicles does not end - a view towards the city center.

Some cars are literally packed by the crew. All this under the benevolent supervision of the city police.

Některá auta jsou doslova našlapána posádkou. To vše za shovívavého dozoru městské policie.

A tady je máme. Vnuk generála Pattona v čele. Jeepy rodinných příslušníků veteránů s fotkami.

People also enthusiastically welcome them with applause. Touching moments. Applause and unadulterated gratitude are deserved. They will pass it on at home to those who risked their lives for us.

Lidé i je nadšeně vítají potleskem. Dojemné chvilky. Potlesk i nefalšovaný vděk si zaslouží. Předají ho doma těm, kteří za nás riskovali své životy.

The event is accompanied by air force flyovers. Here, a Boeing Stratotanker and a pair of F-22 Raptors in formation. Stunning machines. A pair of our Jas-39 Gripens and an Alcy L-159 with their headlights on will also fly over.

The convoy ends after a long time. It was a very nice memory filled with the emotions of adults and the enthusiasm of children.
See you again in a year, descendants of veterans!

Konvoj po dlouhé době končí. Byla to moc pěkná vzpomínka nabitá emocemi dospělých i nadšením dětí.
Tak zase za rok na shledanou, potomci veteránů!
