Staying intentional with my skincare products
Most people around me have skincare products that soothe their body skin the most, oftentimes necessitated by weather conditions and occasionally, a change in the skin complexion complexity, although this is commoner among the ladies. I grew up with a limited skincare product, and that is the petroleum jelly product, which is relatively common in some parts of the world. I remember telling a friend I did not need any hair cream because I did not want to expose my body to creams that may end up changing the appearance of my skin or hair.
There are several petroleum jelly products of vaseline in circulation here in Nigeria, but from inception, I have relied on just a few of the products. This is a similar attitude of my older and younger siblings, where we were exposed to just a certain number of skincare products. I could as well say the limited skincare was either from limited resources or just how my mom wanted us to be brought up. So, I still wonder how, till today, I have only the petroleum jelly Vaseline in my house. The Vaseline is equally cheap to buy, and personally, I prefer to buy one of the biggest sizes available. This way, the turnover is reduced, and I get to use the product for a prolonged period, most times months and not change from one skincare to another. The blue color type equally has an appealing aroma which has arrested my loyalty.
The shea butter oil is a natural alternative that I get comfortable using, and this is because it is sourced from nature and may not be a threat to my body's skin. It is cheap to buy from the market and soothes my skin well when applied. I use it on my scalp occasionally when I have just had a haircut. I usually have this handy either in my home or at my parents to use when the need arises.
The aloe vera plant is known for its medicinal benefits, especially on the skin. We have been lucky to have the aloe vera plant thrive well in my compound and even last beyond the dry seasons. Occasionally, rashes or skin lesions appear on my body, and even when prescribed drugs could do the job, I prefer to rely on the magic of the aloe vera plant. I feel more comfortable applying the natural product than using artificial or Orthodox medicines on skin lesions. And unless there is no significant improvement, that's when I opt for the Orthodox care.
