My Major First BUY in Life: A lesson well learnt
I would not regard myself as someone born with a silver spoon however, as the last male child of my mother (four males and our last born is a female),
I enjoyed some extra privileges such as having to drive the Honda Accord my mother bought in 2009. She actually struggled to drive but perhaps old age did not give much of agility to adapt to the driving despite attending a driving school. And yes, I moved my father’s car once or twice (a Mercedez Benz) and I did not want to have too much problems driving his car without permission and especially as he jealously guarded his car (lol). So, when the Honda Accord came, I summoned the courage to drive it and my first experience was on the main road (I did not go to any driving school prior to then but I observed a lot whenever I entered any car) and, I brushed the wheels a little on the road divide because I was winding down the window and looking at the window instead of facing my front.
I had minimal car brushes as I applied myself appropriately on the road even though my sweet mother compelled me to put a Learner sign there which I looked forward to remove. With the Honda Accord, I stood out among my colleagues and I used the car for well over eight (8) years when I decided to pass it over to one of my elder brothers who did not have a car till then (do not blame me too much for being over pampered). And till this moment, the Honda Accord is still with him, strong and rugged.
That was not the end, our first born leased his Golf car (Golf 4) Volkswagen to me in 2017 as he told me to pay a token of N200,000 ($266) for a car he bought for N2,400,000 ($3,200) shipped from Germany and I dare to say, I did not pay up to N100,000 ($133) before I inherited it fully.
Now you know why I said I had much of a silver spoon as regards purchase of car? I sold off the Golf car in December 2020 when it gave me issues like the Gear and a few others. However in May 2021, I bought my first car with my own money. Yeah, I felt proud and exhausted also.
This was my first major purchase and I thought I bought right but alas! It was a bad buy. I bought a Toyota Camry 2008 for N2,000,000 ($2,666) as a Nigerian used car. Despite checking it with a mechanic, I sold it off after five (5) months for a little above half the price I bought it (I had the engine ringed as it was giving me issues with the oil). I must state also, the money I used to buy the car was my first millions in crypto and perhaps because it was an easy money then, I was a bit less careful in the purchase. I struggled between October 2021 and February 2022 when I eventually got the Camry 2013 I am using right now as a Tokunbo (used from abroad) at 4,300,000 ($5,733). This actually was bought with money from my savings, work and profit from crypto. I have enjoyed the car and in a week from now, I will be doing one year anniversary of the car which is still very neat and has a high market value.
My Lessons are that, we tend to appreciate things more when we inconvenience ourselves before procuring them and easy money sometimes causes us to make avoidable mistakes.
I hope you enjoyed this?
