My Opinions on "Baby Reindeer" Drama
Just now, I read about this new Netflix series called “Baby Reindeer,” and the whole situation is bananas.
Basically, this comedian Richard Gadd created a show based on his experience with a stalker. But here’s the thing: The woman he claims served as his inspiration isn’t exactly thrilled. She says she’s receiving death threats because people have identified her as the subject of Gadd’s performance.
So what does she do? Accuses him of trying to make a name for himself by bullying her on national television. Imagine that — seeing your life story on Netflix, only not in a flattering light. That’s cold.
And what is more, she plans to sue him! According to her, he suffers from what she calls “protagonist syndrome”; it’s like he believes everything in the world should be about him.
But Richard insists that he altered many parts of the play for confidentiality purposes. He even gave fictitious names to all characters. Well, let’s be real; if it’s a true story, people will know!
All he wanted, as per his words, was to demonstrate those times when life seems messed up and we struggle finding love from one wrong angle after another. But did he really need somebody else’s unfortunate life?
Plus, he’s asking fans not to try and find out who the people behind the characters really are. Like, too late!
But I will give it to him, he’s been through some stuff. He talked about how when he was just starting out in comedy he was sexually abused by a TV writer. And he didn’t even want people guessing who that was. He just wants to keep moving forward, you know?
I get it, he’s trying to make art from his pain. But maybe he didn’t think about how it would affect everyone else involved. Like being that woman and seeing your life on TV without your permission? I’d be pretty pissed off too!
However, I suppose this is the cost for being eminent. You expose your life and people are bound to judge it. Despite this fact, it must be painful to watch yourself represented in such a negative way only if that’s not how you perceive yourself.
By the way, I haven’t seen the series so far but now I’m curious. I will remember though that among all these theatrics there is a human being.
