From Caterpillar to Butterfly
I used to think that becoming successful was like flipping a switch. I thought that one day, I’d wake up and suddenly everything would fall into place. But I’ve learned that real growth doesn’t happen overnight; it’s more akin to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, because it takes time, patience, and lots of effort.
When my journey began, I had this huge ambition of starting my own business but didn’t know where to start. It was overwhelming and felt like I would never get there. Then somewhere along the line someone said: “You don't just wake up and become a butterfly. Growth is a process”,That quote really hit me hard.
I became aware that I had to make the process mine in order for me to be successful. This meant that I had to take it easy on myself and let myself develop gradually. That’s what happened. Instead of being so hard on myself and expecting perfection, I switched my attention towards movement forward even if it was tiny.
You know what? It made all the difference. Rather than becoming downhearted when things didn’t turn out as expected, I began treating every failure as a lesson and an opportunity for growth. I fell in love with the journey, not just the end result.
One of the main things I have learnt is the significance of constancy. Discouragement can come easily if instant results are not witnessed, but I have learnt that for success to be achieved one has to show up every single day and put in a lot of effort even when it becomes difficult.
On another note, I’ve had an opportunity to learn about how important it is to be around the right people. Formerly, I used to do everything myself without other people’s aid; however, this changed. Now I know when to request for assistance and surround myself with people who rally behind me and support me.
I'd be dishonest if I said that there haven't been moments when I felt like quitting. There were times during my journey where it seemed like my goals couldn’t be achieved at all. But each time I thought about quitting, this saying kept ringing in my mind: “You do not just wake up and become a butterfly. Growth is a process.” So I was able to keep on moving.
And guess what? It has paid off because today, I can look back to see how much distance lies between then and me now. Not yet where I want to be but closer than yesterday by far. This is no small matter.
Therefore, if you are feeling depressed or thinking you will never reach your goals, recall that growth takes time. Be patient with yourself. Embrace the process. And pretty soon, you’ll burst out of your cocoon and fly away.
