Are Your PIN Codes Safe?
For a safekeeping of our personal information, the use of PIN codes is essential. I recently found this amazing visualization that shows what the most common PINs are. It made me wonder just how secure our personal information really is.
The most frequently used PIN codes include 1234, 1111 and 0000. These are extremely easy to crack and it’s amazing to see how many people still use them. Come on, I mean, 1234? That’s like leaving your front door unlocked!
Although remembering a PIN code can be difficult, using something so simple is like giving away keys to your house; It just isn’t safe.
I was amazed when I saw how many people had 6969 and 7777 as their PIN numbers. I understand that they may look like a fun, easy way to remember, but in reality they are unsafe. It’s basically the same as using your date of birth for a password; it may be easy to remember but it’s also very easy for others to figure out.
It really bothers me when some individuals use their year of birth as their PIN number. Seriously? That is like having a large sign on one’s wallet saying “Please steal my money!” This is just inviting problems.
To my relief my PIN code did not feature among them on the list. But then again, it’s not all that tough to recall either. I selected something personal, something nearly impossible for others to know about me. And no, it sure wasn’t my birthday or my birth year.
What about those people who still make use of these common PIN codes? Are they conscious about the risks? Do they realize how easy it is for someone to guess their pin and have access to their personal information?
I believe that there should be more sensitization on the significance of selecting a strong PIN code. Probably banks and other institutions could help educate individuals concerning the dangers associated with using commonly used Personal Identification Numbers (PINs). It is not just about securing your financial resources; you are also protecting your personal information.
So if you belong to a group of such persons as described above, I am requesting that you change them immediately. Instead, chose something unique and which means something only to you. You may have challenges recalling it but this simple act gives you peace of mind knowing your data are safe.
In conclusion, you must settle on a secure PIN code to protect your personal information. Don’t make it easy for hackers by using common and easily guessed PIN codes. Take the time to select something unique and personal to yourself, and make sure that your personal information is safe and secure.
