Julie was awake but refused to open her eyes, it had long been difficult for her to do so in the mornings. It was not in itself the simple act of separating her eyelids, nor the minimal effort that this implied, what cost her a lot was everything that followed afterwards: getting out of bed, brushing her teeth, taking a shower, getting ready for work, greeting her son and Esteban lovingly, that above all, having to put up with Esteban was what cost her the most. The elephant's barking made her stand up in a single bound, it was time to eat, for the elephant only barked in the mornings to announce breakfast.

She shuffled to the kitchen, as she crossed the hallway she smelled Esteban's coffee, she thought about how much she hated it, neither too dark nor too light, what kind of coffee was that? She went through the door as if she was jumping into an abyss and found herself face to face with him. Esteban greeted her with a smile, he looked tired but the day was just beginning, maybe it was because of 15 years of marriage. He approached Julie, he was looking for the morning kiss, for Esteban this was no longer a gesture of love, it was more like one of those things he had to do every day, like washing the dishes.

As he approached her, they heard the elephant's chirping again, Esteban stopped in his tracks, and they both looked at each other. Julie took advantage of the moment to walk in the opposite direction to him and leaned out of the window trying to see the elephant, she did this to avoid Esteban, because in fact she knew that the elephant was inside the house.

-Breakfast is ready, I'll serve you a plate - commented Esteban with his usual forced kindness.

Julie said nothing, at that moment they both began to hear the elephant's footsteps on the parquet, she was enraptured listening as he approached the kitchen, but Esteban pretended that he was not there, he had developed powerful skills to continue with his life pretending that the elephant did not exist, even so the plate he had on the counter was shaking from the vibrations of the footsteps and this irritated him a lot.

Julie sat down at the table, she felt a little dizzy, the presence of the elephant made her nervous, her heart was fluttering and she was in a cold sweat. She looked around, she saw the dirty kitchen and Esteban in his ridiculous pajamas, it seemed to her that on the walls hung the most beautiful memories of their life together, but now they looked faded and dulled by time, besides the walls were beginning to crack from the vibrations caused by the elephant, in a short time they would no longer be able to hold up.

The elephant peeked through the kitchen door, Julie looked at it with wonder and comfort, seeing it filled her with freshness or courage.

-I've been meaning to tell you something for days - Esteban said as he brought her the plate and sat down across the table from her.

Julie pretended not to hear him, staring at the elephant as it slowly approached the table. Esteban continued to ignore him, staring at Julie as if he wanted to tear her gaze away from the elephant and direct it at him, as before, when she still loved him. They remained in that uncomfortable contemplation for a few seconds, when Esteban's phone rang, the notification of a message, at that moment Julie looked at him, of course this was not the look Esteban wanted, but it had been a long time since Julie only looked at him when her eyes were a pair of knives.

Esteban didn't want to turn to look at the phone, he had become very good at pretending he didn't hear or see things. But they both knew it was Lucia, Julie had realized months ago that she was Esteban's lover, but she also knew how to pretend. The elephant began to devour the food on Julie's plate, she didn't mind, as she hadn't felt hungry in the mornings for a long time. Esteban was aware that Julie had discovered it, but he had decided to ignore it, as he had been ignoring his wife's certainties for years.

The elephant began to get restless, its legs were moving strongly and its barking was getting louder and louder. Julie felt that she could not take it anymore, Esteban clenched his fists tightly with his eyes fixed on the tablecloth. He raised his head violently and prepared to speak, he began by pronouncing the name of the woman with whom he had shared the last 15 years and now felt she could very well be a stranger. Julie looked up when she heard his name, Esteban wanted to say something else, but her little son came through the kitchen door.

-Good morning mommy, good morning daddy - said the little boy with that sweet voice that paralyzed them, while he hugged the elephant affectionately.

The boy sat down at the table and the elephant continued barking and making agitated movements, but Julie and Esteban were ready to continue keeping silence and ignoring the presence of that majestic animal that was getting bigger and bigger. Esteban did not wait long to pick up the phone and start a conversation with Lucia, perhaps to say good morning to each other or to agree on the time of their next meeting. The boy hummed the classic children's song: The circus elephant moves his legs like this, he's very big and very heavy and he doesn't look like you. The elephant danced to the tune and the walls began to crumble around him. While Julie slyly wiped away her tears and thought she should hurry so she wouldn't be late for work.

El elefante de Julie y Esteban (Ingles/Español)

imagen art.jpg

source/fuente source/fuente source/fuente

Thank you for visiting my post. We have all at one time or another had an elephant in the room. Best regards.

An elephant in the house, its large size was ignored as well as the problems. Maybe the woman didn't want to let everything take care of itself, but apparently the elephant was still there destroying the house.
Entertaining to read
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.

Julie and Esteban refuse to address the metaphorical “elephant in the room”. They are drifting and denying. Your powerful, emotion laded writing showcases the brittle relationship brilliantly. You evoke both sympathy and empathy, because, in one form or another, most of us have been in a similar situation; perhaps not the same type of relationship, but certainly the same sense of denial has crept up (or stomped up) on us and rattled the dishes, and yet we chose to ignore the vibrations.

Your world building, here, is skilfully visual; we can see Esteban in his odd pyjamas and we feel the faded “grey” countenance of the scene and the characters. Stunning!

In one way or another we have all had an "Elephant in the room", do we ignore it or deal with it? Thank you for such a wonderful space. It is always a pleasure to participate and share with such talented people. Best regards.

Remarkably well done. By the end I could hardly see through my tears.

Evocative metaphor; perfectly executed to highlight the way a relationship will crumble, if it’s dying, no matter how often we deny the sound of its laboured breathing. 💕🤗❤️

"Remarkably well done. By the end I could hardly see through my tears."
Wowww You leave me speechless. Thank you for such a valuable comment.

That desire to do nothing from Julie, that disdain from Esteban, the pretending and ignoring that nothing is happening, but it is there and cannot be hidden.

Always a pleasure to participate.

Totally agree, we pretend that nothing happens when we have situations to solve and we are afraid of changes. Thanks for vsiting my post.

Hahaha, imagine using a metaphor in this way! Quite entertaining! It was turned literal yet the meaning stayed with the story. Despite the seriousness, I find it partly humorous. 😄

We can laugh, it is valid, but facing what causes us so much pain is not easy. Thanks for visiting my post.

Seeing my name being used in a story is an honor. I guess this is the first time I've read a story with "Julie" as the character. I like how you have created a wonderful story using a figure of speech.
