That Phenomenon called Love

The theme of love is one topic that I feel has received the highest writings and therefore is not a concept we are ignorant of in the sense of its awareness. However, it's also one topic that has been highly misinterpreted and misplaced such that it has over time lost its authenticity and seems to be a negative concept.

First of all, I wish to sound it very loud to anyone reading this that the concept of love is one concept that is most positive in the world. Thus, if you have experienced something that seemed to be like love but which has caused you pain and you now feel it's a bad thing, know it that you are mistaking.

What is love? Simply put without complications, it is a feeling of affection towards another person. But to distinguish love from like, love involve an intense feeling. Thus, the affection in love is deeper such that one can decide to give his all for the interest of the other person.

There are different types of love which include eros which refers to the romantic love between couples or people in a relationship. Simply put, it involves sexual attraction towards another person. Aside from eros, there is filia with is like the affection for a friend. Its mutual, no strings attached. There exist also the affection for family, the affection for the self, the kind of playful affection which exist mostly among playmates especially kids. There is also a kind of obsessive love. This kind of love is not healthy at all.

We all originate from families and so have that first feeling of family affection. This feeling is natural, you just feel that affection for that brother or sister or mother or father of yours not because he has done anything so special but because he is a member of your family.

However, the affection here can be tampered and turned to hate when you experience bad treatment from a member. This leads to the cases of family members keeping malice and even killing each other. Or it can even be the case of jealousy leading to hate and destroying the loving relationship.

Very importantly I will like to highlight more on the eros which is the love between people in a romantic relationship. Here, the concept of love is often misplaced. It is often misplaced with infatuation and lust.

It is true that something must attract us to someone but when that thing remains the object of your affection for the person it surely is not love and surely is lust and which seeks only the satisfaction of the self.

In the first place, love is deep and it is wanting the good of the other person even at the expense of your own happiness. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is a clear example of what love is. After an examination of the love of christ, I have concluded that there is no love if one cannot offer his life for another. This may sound too extreme but then, it is the authentic love that we are talking about.

A lot of persons have had relationships upon relationships in which they professed love to each other everyday and infact more than ten times everyday but at the end they break up. What is the cause? It is the case that they are unable to trascend above that factor that attracted them to each other at first.

The truth remains that humans change in all spheres and if for instance what attracted you to a lady is her big hip or whatever other thing and you dwell upon that factor and not wanting to see anything else to love her for, one day the hip may not be there again and you draw back.

In this case, it was never love. Love is sincere, it is sacrificial, it is enduring. Love is a beautiful thing but people have gotten themselves hurt in life because they truly loved another. It happens that in a loving relationship one partner may be truly in love with the other but the other is just holding because of a selfish gain and once he or she has it, disappears and leaves the other person broken.

It is at this point that people has defined love to be a bad phenomenon. But then it is a beautiful thing. My advice to people is to always love with reason and not just with emotion alone. When you apply reason in your romantic relationship, you know when your partner is playing you and will guard yourself.

Indeed the concept of love is a theme of endless discussion but I wish to stop here but not without reiterating that point of loving with reason so you know when your partner is a cheat and not really in love like you do. Guard your heart, it's very precious. Don't make your life miserable because of someone. Love wisely and for your friends, love them like Jesus.
