A Perfect Day

It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning when Joey woke up excited for the day ahead. He had been looking forward to this day for months - his parents were taking him and his little sister Zoe to the county fair! Joey loved rides, games, fried food, and all the excitement of the fair.

After a quick breakfast, they loaded into the car with the twins, Joey's younger cousins who were visiting for the weekend. The two hour drive went by fast as the kids listened to music and played car games in the backseat. They finally arrived at the fairgrounds, the air thick with smells of sweet and greasy treats.

As they went through the ticket gate, Zoe's eyes grew wide at the sight of the towering rollercoasters and spinning rides lit up with flashing lights. Joey grabbed a map, eager to locate all the thrill rides. The twins made a beeline for the petting zoo, pressing their little hands against the fences surrounding sheep, cows, pigs and more.

Joey's parents offered to take the younger kids on some tame rides first. "Joey, why don't you check out some rides with your friends?" his dad said, pointing toward a rowdy group of boys from Joey's grade. Joey raced off to join them, feeling very grown up that he got to explore without parents watching his every move.

The friends dared each other to go on the biggest, most nauseating rides they could find. Joey felt his stomach drop as the Fireball rollercoaster did three terrifying loop-de-loops. He wobbled off feeling dizzy but accomplished. Next they tackled the Zipper, a spinning cage that flipped them upside down over and over. Joey bellowed along to the rock music blasting around them, hands raised in the air.

After a couple hours of rides, Joey met back up with his family. The twins grinned proudly wearing matching stuffed animal prizes. Zoe licked an enormous swirl lollipop, sticky rainbow colors covering her little fingers. Joey's parents looked a bit queasy but still smiled, caught up in the kids' contagious joy.

They headed toward the enormous Ferris wheel glowing at the center of the fairgrounds. As they climbed into the gently rocking cars, Joey gazed out over the festive lights starting to sparkle as dusk settled in. He smiled as Zoe snuggled up next to him, the twins chattering with excitement across from them. Rising into the summer sky, Joey felt on top of the world surrounded by the people he loved most.

After the Ferris wheel, they walked around playing silly games like egg tosses, milk bottle pyramids, and ring tosses. Joey let the twins win a few times, loving how their faces lit up. Zoe begged to go through the fun house mirrors, giggling at the reflections of their wacky warped bodies.

By now everyone was getting hungry. They headed toward the food area, the smell of fried dough and grilled meat making their mouths water. Zoe nibbled on a corndog bigger than her face. The twins tried their first ever elephant ear, a sugary fried treat, tearing off pieces with their little fingers.

Joey went for the mega burger and fries, loading it up with bacon, cheese, onion rings and more between two thick buns. He could barely wrap his mouth around it for a massive bite. His mom just shook her head and laughed. She always joked he must have a hollow leg to pack away so much food. Grease dripped down his arms but he blissfully ignored it, focused on taste bud paradise.

With full bellies, they decided they better start heading home since the twins would need to go to bed soon. The sun slipped below the horizon as they made their way back to the parking lot, tired kids trailing behind parents. Zoe was asleep in her dad's arms before they even made it out of the fairground gates. Joey replayed his favorite moments from the day, smiling to himself.

Back in the car, the radio played softly and the twins whispered in the backseat. Up front Joey's eyes were growing heavy too when his dad spoke gently to his mom. "Another great trip to the fair, huh hon?" Joey's heart swelled at this new family tradition in the making. Snuggled into his seat, mind still whirling with rollercoasters and cotton candy dreams, he drifted off to sleep.

Your story is lovely, @jessicaossom. What a great day for the family. It is often hard for all of the kids to find enjoyment at a fair or theme park if they are all different ages, but it worked out well for them, since Joey found some friends.

We have some tips for you. One thing to think about is how to add a bit more drama to a story like this one. Everything goes well for the family all day, with the exception of a bit of queasiness. But an important element of short stories is conflict. The introduction of that conflict, and how it plays out in the story and is resolved in the end is called the "story arc."

Conflict can be as simple as an argument or disagreement, or it can be something more dramatic, like (in this story) kids getting stuck inside a haunted house, or separated from their parents or chased by a scary clown.

We have some great resources about conflict and story arcs in our catalog of fiction writing tips:

Now I wish that I had gone with them to the county fair. I would have joined Joey, his little sister Zoe, and their younger cousins to enjoy the various rides, games, and delicious fair food that they had. Lovely, story, Jessy.

Reading about a family going to a fair gives me a picture of a "perfect family."
The twin is luck to have responsible and caring parents. Not all children have parents like those characters.

You really captured the essence of the fair in your story. The fun and excitement experienced by Joey and Zoe was quite vivid and makes me want to join in the fun as well.

Hello, @jessicaossom

A fluid narrative full of vivid descriptions that makes you put yourself in the protagonist's shoes. I have many years without visiting amusement parks, but thanks to your fiction, no longer.

Greetings.
