A perfect match

Over the years, I've realized that I don't really have much luck with relationships. My mom would always tell me: "Jenny, do not worry; when the right one comes, you'll know it." But I hate to say this; I was tired of waiting for the right one, and I was having serious contemplations to dump the whole thing and become a nun, which I felt would be great for me since I wouldn't have to bother with heartbreaks, but just as they say, "The universe always has its own way of turning things around." When I finally came to the conclusion that love and relationships weren't for me, things changed.

'So you're Jenny, as in Jennifer, right?' The text popped up on my screen, and I smiled.
I've been having an exchange of texts with this fella for over forty minutes, and I haven't even met him for the first time, but unlike some other guys, he seemed pretty fun to chat, and he was an 'A' in keeping conversations, and I never felt bored.

'Do you think we can meet up some time?' Before I could stop myself, I had already sent it, and I nervously waited for his response.

'How about tomorrow evening?' He texted back, and I squealed in delight, having a butterfly feeling in my belly.

That night, I slept like a newborn, which I hadn't done in some time. The next day came, and I couldn't wait for dusk to draw near, and when it did, I happily got dressed and found my way to our meeting point.

A good thing about blind dates is that you'll never truly know what the other person looks like until you've seen them. In my case, it wasn't much of a blind date any longer since he had sent a couple of his photos to me, but I couldn't be too sure till I met with him. I hid in the shadows with the aim of seeing him first, so I could be sure that he wasn't an ugly head, but when I finally saw him, I fought back the scream that was surging from my throat. He was what you would call 'a handsome beauty', if such words exist.

"Hello handsome, you must be Godwin." I greeted him with a pleasant smile.

"Yes, I am, and you must be the lovely Jennifer." He said in response, and I chuckled.

I've always had eyes for good things, so I checked him out immediately, and I was awed. He was tall and handsome with his unique brown eyes; he had the skin of an olive, and his voice, which was like that of a seraph, sent shivers down my spine.

"So where do we head out to?" He asked me, thereby snapping me out of my daydream.

"We could hang out a little and probably swing by at your place later." I managed to respond.

It turned out that Godwin wasn't as much of a talker as I had thought him to be. In fact, he was totally shy, and I had to do all the talking to save us from a boring evening, which also turned out nice. I liked that he gave all his attention to me, and that was all that mattered.
The evening ended earlier than we had expected, and I felt a bit reluctant to leave, but then my mom's words always seemed to push me.
She would tell me, "Don't let them notice how deep you've fallen for them until you're sure of who they are."
With this thought, I stood to my feet and flashed him a big smile.

"I should be heading home now." I said to him.

"Already? Ain't we heading to my place anymore?" He asked me, and one look at him, I could tell that he was also reluctant to let me go, and this made me smile.

"I'd really love to do that, but it's getting late already. Maybe some other time." I said in response, feigning regret and trying to sound apologetic.

"Okay then, if you say so. It was really nice seeing you today." He said to me.

"Yeah, same here. It was cool to finally meet, and I don't regret it." I responded.

"You're beautiful." He said, and I looked up at him. "I should've said it earlier, but I couldn't just find the right words." I couldn't respond to him. I felt my cheek hit up, and I tried to control the fleeting emotions that went through me at that moment.

"Thanks for the compliment." I finally managed to respond in between my smiles.

"I hope it doesn't have to end here. We'll meet again, right?" He asked me as we both walked out of the restaurant.

"It certainly won't be the end, handsome. I'll text you when I get home." I replied, and a short moment of hug was exchanged, and we parted ways.

I got home and I reminisced on the moment I had shared with Godwin, but a pang of fear hit me. It was the fear I have always had about boys. I wondered if he was a good guy or probably one of the bad guys.

"If today was a camouflage, I'll definitely see his true form tomorrow." I assured myself and finally drifted off to the welcoming embrace of a peaceful sleep.

A few weeks later, I and Godwin started dating, and it was then that I realized that beneath the shyness was a man who loved to chatter, and he was funny to the bones. We could literally discuss anything at anytime, and he was never too busy for me, and I was the same for him. I was so happy that sometimes I would wonder, 'Where has he been all this time that I couldn't see him?'

My mom noticed how happy I had become, and one day she decided to have a conversation with me.
"He loves you as much as you love him, right?" She asked me.

"Mom, he adores me. Never have I felt the kind of love that he shows me." I replied and smiled at the thought of him.

"You're glowing." She commented.

"What can I say, Mom?" We both laughed.

"I'm glad you're happy, and I truly hope that this will last more than the others or probably stick forever." My mom said.

The thought of 'forever' made me shiver. The truth is, before that conversation, I've always wondered how long what I had with Godwin could last, but I never thought of forever, and hearing my mom say it made me feel some kind of way.

"Mom, do you think forever would be possible?" I voiced my concerns.

"My dear daughter, truly you've been through a lot with relationships, but I can tell you this: If you both love yourselves very much and you understand yourselves too, then forever is a possibility." She responded.

I didn't say anything. I just stared at my feet, but she held my chin and looked me in the eyes.
"Do you have doubts?" She asked me.

"No, mom. I have no doubts." I replied, and from there on, we talked about other things.

To be sincere, I and Godwin's relationship hasn't always been roses and juices, but it was everything I could ever ask for.
Sometimes, I'd look at him and wonder, 'What kind of man is this?' And that's probably when he offends me, which is on very rare occasions, but then other times, I'm so filled with joy, and it all seems like it was a match made in heaven.

Thanks for reading

This was a lovely account of how you found your perfect match. I noticed that you tend to support the same writers' stories on a regular basis. I think it would benefit you to support other writers too to gain a broader perspective of the the writing in The Ink Well and learn from a broader range of genres and voices. Please do also remember that we require our writers to support at least two stories for each one that they submit themselves.

Mummy was right. When the right person comes, the signs will be there, and you will feel them.

Mummy's words you are glowing remind me of how people told my babe she is glowing too, I guess when a girl is in love and happy, she starts to glow😃

I love this write up, I love love
