What's Your Best Xmas or New Year Memories?
By Jackson Mark
Growing up in Cross River State, Nigeria, I have been fortunate enough to experience some of the most unique and fascinating Christmas and New Year celebrations in the country. Two events that stand out in my memory are the Tinkoriko Festival in Calabar and the Ekpe cult's Christmas celebration.
The Tinkoriko Festival takes place every New Year's Eve in Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State. The festival is a spectacular display of music, dance, and cultural heritage. Thousands of people gather at the U.J. Esuene Stadium to watch the performances, which include traditional dances, cultural displays, and live music.
What makes the Tinkoriko Festival truly special is the sense of community and unity that pervades the event. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate the start of a new year, and the atmosphere is always electric.
Another memorable Christmas celebration in Cross River State is the Ekpe cult's festivities. The Ekpe cult is a traditional institution in the state, and its members are known for their colorful costumes and energetic performances.
During Christmas, the Ekpe cult members take to the streets to perform their traditional dances and songs. The performances are always accompanied by music from traditional instruments, such as drums and flutes.
What I find particularly fascinating about the Ekpe cult's Christmas celebration is the way it blends traditional culture with modern Christian traditions. The cult members incorporate Christian themes and symbols into their performances, creating a unique and captivating spectacle.
Overall, my experiences of the Tinkoriko Festival and the Ekpe cult's Christmas celebration have left an indelible mark on my memory. They are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Cross River State and the warmth and hospitality of its people.
it would be nice if you add some pictures that could bring us to the festive day in your town
