(ESP-ENG) El naufragio del Manchester City.
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Of the last 11 games that City have played, they have only won one against Nottingham Forest, a team that coincidentally is just one point ahead of them. A few months ago I think this situation was unthinkable, we were facing the best club in the world, a team with a defined idea of the game, with world class players, with a solid and clear medium and long term project, with a coach who is easily top 3 in the world. But in the blink of an eye everything changed, that devastating machine disappeared from the field, some say it was a surprise, but no, everything has a reason for being.
I don't know how many times I have quoted this phrase from Valdano in my blog but here it goes again: “soccer is a state of mind” and yes, he is quite right. Manchester City from September onwards started to receive negative news, one after the other. For those who do not know the English club is on trial, one that ends in early 2025 for alleged financial irregularities, there is talk of more than 120 violations of the famous financial fair play which would mean a relegation in the Premier, expulsion from all domestic competitions and of course, continental tournaments. This is something that clearly affects the club because the precedents exist, just ask Juventus.
Is it possible that the players ask themselves and before the possible sanctions that may come, where they see themselves in the future playing? - It is possible, there are many who have an armored mint for it is known that there are others who not so much. No matter how secure their future is, this will always be a concern for them. The other thing that should be mentioned and that is not a minor issue is injuries. Many times the press and we ourselves focus on Madrid and Barcelona, but City's injury situation is alarming and is the result of what we have talked about before, the criminal calendar to which these players are exposed.
Currently Aké, Akanji and the already known injury to Rodri are the club's active absentees. But until recently Foden, Stones, Ruben Dias, Doku, Walker and a little further back De Bruyne were out. As you can see all key players and name players for the team. This has really affected the performance of the club, it is very evident, many games have been really overtaken by the rivals and they have run out of ideas. The loss of Rodri was brutal, the team does not have a replacement, coincidentally the debacle of the club began a few games after his injury. And well, as usual, once players return to action they do not reach the same level and we are seeing that with the Portuguese Dias and the Belgian De Bruyne, the performance of both is leaving much to be desired.
And finally, it is possible that we are also in the presence of an expiration of the project, recently Pep Guardiola was renewed until 2027, I do not know if this is good news or not. Not because the Catalan's ability is in doubt, but because sometimes things expire and there is no way to rescue them. Also part of the club's internal sports team has stepped aside, people who were Pep's right-hand man, which makes us think that the coach is increasingly alone. I would think that a renewal of the project is necessary given the lack of vision and ideas that we are seeing. City did not move at all in the summer market, we will see if they do so now in the winter. Clearly there are players who need a replacement despite the big name they have.
I think the best example of this situation that ended up becoming a perfect storm was yesterday's game against Manchester United. A City team that was leading the game in less than two minutes turned it upside down with two defensive errors. It is known that Matheus Nunes is in provisional form but yesterday was unforgivable, two errors in a row that led to the equalizer. And then passive marking allowed Lisandro Martinez to put in a 30-yard pass for the second goal. City is sunk, they can't lose a game like this, especially at home. A bad streak, a slump, injuries, lack of mentality, expiration of the project or all together? - What do you think? - As my grandmother used to say: “it will dawn and we will see”.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!
