(ESP-ENG) Cero sorpresas! [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Finally this first league-style phase culminated yesterday with a total of 18 simultaneous games, something never seen before in the competition, to define the teams that would go directly to the round of 16 and those that would play in the playoffs. Having so many games at the same time can be something very entertaining or a complete nightmare for those of us who wanted to see a little of each game, but well, that's how it has always been, the last day is played at the same time. The interesting thing is that before yesterday's games there were teams that could have been left out in a rather simple and surprising way, big clubs could have been left out in this first round.
But what seemed to be really probable options ended up being speculations and teams like City, PSG, Madrid, Juventus and even Milan had real options to stay out as long as they had a series of results that were not complicated to achieve. I think the most “transcendental” match yesterday was Manchester City vs Club Brugge, as the English were out of everything and only depended on themselves to advance, they had to win if they wanted the season not to be a failure. In the end they won 3-1 after coming back from a 0-1 deficit in a second half where they came out with a different mentality and with a certain Savinho to change the face of the citizens. Did you expect anything else? - Not really, despite the moment of the club I think that in the end these big teams end up doing their homework.
Teams that won, as the theory said: Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG, Dortmund. On the other hand, Barcelona drew with Atalanta and could not take advantage of Liverpool's unexpected defeat to climb to the top of the table. At the top of the table, in my opinion, were a pair of clubs that nobody expected to be there: Aston Villa and French side Lille. This new format, strange for some, has the particularity that in just the round of 16 we can see great clashes partly due to the precarious position in which these clubs were placed. The fact that City, Madrid and Bayern are in the same group of possible head-to-heads is crazy, it gives us indications that these round of 16 can be very attractive but at the same time can be a double-edged sword because by eliminating the big clubs so early, what can we expect for the final stages?
In general terms, although it is true that this format is strange, I think it has not bothered me at all, it opens a little the range of possibilities and is less restrictive when considering the crossings. This draw will be tomorrow where we will know how these playoffs will be. I feel that from this new phase we will see the teams in a different way to what we have seen so far, it is likely that we will see a reset and those who are called to appear will begin to do so. The level of play of some teams has been pitiful during this half season, I would expect that from now on that trend will change. Obviously not by magic but by necessity and the weight of the shield.
But what is there to know so far? - Well, the possibility of a Barca-PSG in the round of 16, Inter-Milan or Inter-Juve, Real Madrid-Atletico, etc. Of course, this will depend on the draw and what some clubs do in the playoffs. As I said, the range is wide and this gives rise to the spectacle to be played early on in the Champions League. The conclusion is that there were no big surprises in the eliminated teams, being a group everything changes very fast and gives some margin to the teams to recover also linking to what may happen in other fields. Tomorrow we will see how part of the draw looks like and I hope to see some great playoffs.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!
