There are actors who are very good at playing certain roles or characters and James McAvoy is one of them. I say this because of Kevin Wendell or Dennis in “Split” where he really showed what a great actor he is and for his performance in this film that also surprised me for good. We continue bringing movies about the month in which we are and this time I present a real psychological thriller but one of those that are uncomfortable to watch. I had already read about this film and it caught my attention, directed by James Watkins, a Briton who is no stranger to the genre and that's why he brought us a very dark and above all macabre story. Besides it's from Blumhouse and produced by the same guy who made “The Invisible Man”, there's a level here.
I start by asking, how open are you with strangers, are you the type to meet people and then decide to overshare with them? - Well, that's kind of what it's all about. We have an American family living in London who are on vacation in Italy. On that trip they meet another British family who are apparently charming and nice people and with whom they make a quick “click”. Everything flows smoothly and, of course, from the start they have to look good; it is at that moment when Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), the British, invite these Americans to their cottage in the countryside to spend a weekend. It is from that invitation when the lives of Louise (Mackenzie Davis) and Ben (Scoot McNairy) would change forever.
Once everyone is in that camp and begins to live together more closely, the real personalities begin to bloom. It turns out that Paddy and Ciara may not be who they say they are, there are strange attitudes, weird behaviors, out of place comments; a myriad of things that will make the stay one of the most uncomfortable things you will see in a movie. From this point on, everything changes radically and that quiet weekend turns into a nightmare from which it is not so easy to escape. The reviews of this film are pretty good in general, I never watch this but because it's a suspense/horror film I sometimes do and I have to say that I fully agree with them.
For a film to be uncomfortable it has to be special, the first part of this film is great, the interactions are spectacular to the level that you settle several times in your chair because of the uncomfortable and even funny dialogues and behaviors of this family; you know there is something weird, the atmosphere is extremely heavy, the vibe does not inspire any confidence but you still do not decipher what it is and that's where the hook is. It is not until almost at the end where everything is discovered, a discovery that I really did not expect, I was totally unprepared and to close the film has a scene which I did not see coming, honestly it was a good closing.
The plot is very good because it is cooked little by little, add to this the great plot twist that has where everything is discovered and you get a really Dantesque story full of evil. The psychological terror is always present, there are moments of tension, quite a lot I would say; there are its weird decisions, very typical in this type of films but you understand that they are in favor of the plot so that it can move forward, they will bother you a little but you have to keep in mind this I'm telling you. It's not a slasher, nor is there excessive violence; it's a dark story that involves mental problems, unresolved issues from the past, a dangerous combination.
There is little to say about the performances. As I said, McAvoy is very good in this kind of characters, I think he's one of the best he's given. Here he shows a psychotic/dangerous/passive-aggressive arsenal that he plays quite well. The others are also at his level, his partner, the other family and the children, much care and attention to these children who are key pieces in the plot, development and especially outcome of the story. The two great scenes of the child, Paddy's son, are the ones that made me raise a little note to the film. I think this movie has everything for you to enjoy it in this month of terror and fear.
Highly recommended, I did not expect it to hook and like it so much. I repeat, it has its things in the script that you may not understand but if it were not so the plot would be impossible to advance. Good performances, the most demanding scenes are also well done, a simple but unexpected plot. I give it an 8/10. It lasts less than two hours. I leave the trailer here.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Saludosss!
