Martes 11 y miércoles 12 de abril, los días en los que los cuartos de final por fin llegarían y con ellos la promesa de que veríamos grandes partidos y por que no, una que otra sorpresa. Lo primero puede que se haya cumplido pero lo segundo considero que no ya que dichas "sorpresas" pasaban, según mi lógica, por el hecho de que el Benfica se llevara un triunfo en casa y de que el Napoli hiciera lo mismo ante el Milán. No fue así y que ambos equipos italianos pertenecientes a la misma ciudad se llevaron las respectivas victorias, habrá que ver si son capaces de sostenerlas en la vuelta de la semana que viene. Pero no vine a hablar de ese par partidos sino de la lucha de titanes que en los papales suponía que iban a ser el Bayern-City y el Madrid-Chelsea.
Tuesday April 11 and Wednesday April 12, the days when the quarterfinals would finally arrive and with them the promise that we would see great matches and, why not, a surprise or two. The former may have been fulfilled, but the latter I think not, as these "surprises" were, according to my logic, Benfica winning at home and Napoli doing the same against Milan. This was not the case and both Italian teams belonging to the same city took the respective victories, we will have to see if they are able to sustain them in next week's return leg. But I am not here to talk about those two matches but about the battle of the titans that Bayern-City and Madrid-Chelsea were supposed to be.
Comencemos por el del día martes en donde en el Etihad los de Pep Guardiola se verían las caras con el Bayern del ahora nuevo técnico Thomas Tuchel. Los ciudadanos llegaban en un estado de gracia impresionante habiendo ganado sus últimos seis partidos en casa incluyendo uno al Liverpool en una de las mejores actuaciones de la temporada en lo que fue un verdadero partidazo. Mientras que en el Bayern están estrenando un nuevo técnico por lo que están en esa transición que muchas veces puede ser caótica. La realidad es que los bávaros no están bien, por algo salieron de Nagelsmann, y es que salieron eliminados de la copa alemana mostrando un juego bastante inconsistente. Veríamos un cambio en este partido? - poco o nada...
Let's start with Tuesday's game at the Etihad where Pep Guardiola's side faced Bayern under new coach Thomas Tuchel. The Citizens were in impressive form having won their last six home games including one against Liverpool in one of the best performances of the season in what was a truly great game. While Bayern are under a new coach so they are in that transition that can often be chaotic. The reality is that the Bavarians are not doing well, they left Nagelsmann for a reason, and they were eliminated from the German Cup showing a very inconsistent game. Este creo que era el partido que más difícil se me hacia pronosticar ya que ambos equipos, independientemente de sus situaciones actuales, son dos bestias en el futbol europeo así que las expectativas estaban un poco elevadas. Empezaba el partido y recuerdo que en los primeros minutos el Bayern estaba mostrando más intensidad que los ciudadanos, por lo menos se veía una intención pero eso solo duró 15 minutos ya que después de allí el City recalibraría su juego, se acomodaría en el campo y comenzaría a desplegar el juego que mostró durante todo el partido. Desde esos primeros instantes ya en el Bayern se estaban viendo grietas defensivas, hubo un centro de De Bruyne en donde Upamecano terminado saltando a la nada y que no termina en gol porque Sommer es un buen portero.
I think this was the most difficult match for me to predict as both teams, regardless of their current situations, are two beasts in European soccer so expectations were a bit high. The match started and I remember that in the first minutes Bayern was showing more intensity than the citizens, at least there was an intention but that only lasted 15 minutes because after that City recalibrated their game, settled on the field and began to deploy the game they showed throughout the match. El primer tanto llegaría gracias al español Rodri y es que se lanzó el gol de su vida, una pegada de pierna izquierda desde fuera del área que batió sin contemplación al arquero suizo; si le regalan los espacios eso es lo que obtienen. Con ese primer gol el Bayern se vendría un poco abajo, no había manera de que las conexiones con Musiala y el hombre de arriba funcionaran, de hecho el alemán tuvo un partido bastante flojo para lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver de él, Coman estuvo perdido también y bueno sin hablar de la defensa. El único que mostró algo fue Sané ya que parecía que quería hacerle un gol a su ex equipo más que otra cosa, tuvo varias pegadas de peligro y jugadas interesantes.

Entraba la segunda parte y veríamos una última de Sané antes de que comenzara el show de Upamecano, un central que seguramente nunca va olvidar la noche que tuvo en Inglaterra. Ya en los primeros 45 vimos un flaqueo de su parte, pues en estos segundos 45 llegaría la consolidación de lo que veía venir. El segundo gol fue gracias a una perdida de balón suya ante Haaland para que el noruego asistiera a Bernardo Silva, el mejor del equipo de Pep para mi, y este con un cabezazo pusiera el 2-0. A partir de acá hubo una desconexión importante de todo el Bayern a raíz de los errores del central francés porque si, fueron varios y muy grandes. El tercer tanto fue del inevitable Haaland gracias a un centro que le queda en los pies por una muy debil por no decir inexistente marca de Upamecano.

Un partido que se me pareció bastante al del City-Bayern ya que los de Londres están en una condición parecida y es que Lampard vuelve a los blues de forma interina tras el despido de Potter. Al igual que con Nagelsmann no se yo si no fue un error a pesar de que lo que estaba haciendo Graham Potter con este equipo era apocalíptico y de que también en su momento dije que Potter tenía que irse. El Chelsea es un desastre de equipo, van de onceavos en la Premier sin ningún chance de quedar en puestos de Champions, porque si, no los veo escalando los 27 puntos que las faltan para llegar a la cuarta plaza. Ayer un comentarista decía, "hay que preparase para ver una Champions sin el Chelsea y sin el Liverpool" y mira si, tiene mucha razón.

A los 20 minutos ya Benzema ponía arriba a los merengues con una asistencia de Vinicius, la mejor dupla de Europa si me lo preguntan. El Chelsea como que no quiso bajar los brazos pero nunca fueron suficientes, lo mejor de los blues sin miedo a equivocarme creo que fue Joao Félix y de repente Sterling con una que otra escapada que incomodaba a Camavinga.

El segundo tiempo sería más de lo mismo con un Vinicius siendo un factor diferenciador importante, a Reece James lo tuvo a pan y agua siempre, pocas veces lo pudo detener y es que el brasileño cada vez se consolida más. Rápidamente el Chelsea se quedaría con 10 y esto condicionaría todo el partido restante, Chilwell bajaría a Rodrygo y vería la tarjeta roja. La realidad es que los dirigidos por Lampard nunca tuvieron la reacción necesaria ni siquiera para empatar el partido y es que faltando 15 para el final llegaría la estocada definitiva en los pies de Asensio con un gran gol la verdad. El Madrid se encamina para otra semifinal, es verdad que un 2-0 es posible de levantar pero no este Chelsea; como dije con el Bayern, tendrían que pasar demasiadas cosas para que eso suceda. Pero bueno, los partidos hay que jugarlos y todo puede pasar.

Si bien no me gustó el cambio de Dt, para mí, Bayern estaba jugando muy bien. Rodri hizo un golazo que no se puede evitar, después en la segunda parte, más de lo mismo, hasta que Upamecano erro y de ahí si vino la superioridad del City con un equipo que se cayó anímicamente.
Chelsea está en otra cosa, suerte tuvieron que el resultado no fue peor, porque fácilmente el Madrid pudo haber liquidado la serie.

Si, el Madrid pudo haber hecho un par más sin ningún problema. Con todo y eso creo que esa eliminatoria, bueno las dos en realidad, están más que resueltas. No veo ni al Chelsea ni al Bayern levantar esos resultados, no tienen juego ni mentalidad para eso, sobre todo los ingleses.
Esperaba más paridad peo no fue el caso, se suponía que iban a ser unos cuartos más parejos y mira, todo lo contrario!
